Yes, this is the case. For some reason, I thought the Wii U was just the extra controller that you could purchase, but apparently, I was very confused. It disappoints me that you have to buy an entire new console to play the NSMB when you can play the game just using the regular Wiimotes.

I have some extra points available in the Wii Virtual Console. Can anyone recommend a good coop game available in the virtual console (preferably one where we can use my Gamecube controllers)? Neither my roommate nor I are really into shooter-type games and it's more fun if we can play together instead of against each other.

I also am excited about the new Lego game for LotR...am planning to buy it when the price gets slashed. I've beat both of the Lego Harry Potter games and Lego Star Wars.

I'd be in for the PS3 as well

The LOTR Lego game has been fun so far, as I mentioned earlier. I need to get back to it.

It is long though, I will say that. I spent about four hours and am only at the part where Boromir tries to take the ring.

The Star wars ones were long as well, almost prohibitively so.

It;s why I haven;t picked up LOTR or Indiana Jones.

I'm pretty bored with Madden, NCAA Football, NBA 2K13 and WWE 13, so I picked up -- of all things -- NCAA Basketball 09 tonight for 10 bucks. I would've gotten the 2010 version, but the place I went didn't have any copies and it's still going for more than $30.

    Anyone still have this game?

Oddly enough, I did the same exact thing a couple weeks ago! I still haven't played it yet, but it's sitting on my bookshelf, waiting to be played. Before that, my last update was the one with Josh Childress on the cover, so it's kind of easy to see why the series has gone by the wayside... Once they really got the recruiting aspect down, and the game itself played pretty well, people probably didn't feel the need to upgrade. I still wish they would do a new one every couple of years though. (Says the guy who hadn't bought one since 2004 or 2005, roughly.)

EA put all its time, money and effort toward Madden -- and a few other titles -- and just gave up on college basketball. I thought they'd at least let folks still play online, but nope. That feature has been disabled.

On a side note: Anyone playing WWE 13 on 360 have server issues like I do all the time? I'm not sure why the servers are never down -- or so it seems that way -- for ps3.

Eh, PS3 / PSN was down for about 12 to 24 hours this weekend, so it's not all roses for us :D I tried playing some Mass Effect 3 on Friday night, but in their defense, it was fine by Saturday afternoon, when I managed some co-op Borderlands.

Would I be a fool to pick up a cheap 360 or PS3 when the next gens are only a year away? I only have a Wii, and after watching the Wii U stumble spectacularly out of the gate I won't be upgrading.

There are a lot of rumors that the next gen systems are even more motion based, and that's not going to work for me (I use a cane to walk, for hell's sake). I'm sticking with joysticks and buttons, thankyouverymuch.

A new Xbox (the original one) still ranges from about $50 to $75 on eBay, and you can buy a refurbished or new 360 at GameStop for $150 to $200. So, I don't think the price is going to drop that much more, maybe one more time on the higher end ones when the next generation comes out, to clear inventory for places. If you want one, you might as well take the plunge right now.

Make sure you take into account the various models and additional fees though. For a 360, you're going to want to pay the extra monthly fee for Live if you like online gaming and its perks at all. For PS3, their online service is free, but in general it's rougher around the edges and not as robust. Both systems also have a myriad of options, ranging from the Move / Action stuff like the Wii has, to how much internal memory you have on the hard drive. (Speaking from experience, it's pretty easy to stream or copy things from my PC to my PS3 for watching on the big TV, to the point where I cancelled my cable, and I imagine it's probably simple for the 360 as well.)

To add to that about the 360:

Definitely upgrade to Gold (the pay service) of Xbox Live. It's $59.95, but it's very routinely discounted. You can find 3-month cards or even 12-month cards for sometimes as much as half off at places like newegg.com, as well as other places.

As far as memory, you probably need more than the 4GB of the lowest-priced model. My HD is pretty full right now, but you can supplement that with memory sticks.

The college basketball series was discontinued because of a class-action lawsuit brought on by Ed O'Bannon that EA was using too true likenesses of players, and said players weren't being reimbursed for the use of said likenesses. As of September 2012, the case was still ongoing in courts.
