Hell, I know of a place where the executive editor flipped a coin when the SE asked him which of his two preps writers he should let go.

It didn't come out until about a year after it happened. The SE was axed in the next round of layoffs and he started telling people how the Exec. Ed had handled layoffs.

I saw what you did there, Azrael. ;)

Still say that if I want to work for something less than the last-bottom-dollar, that's my call. But for a boss to be praising me for working 24/7 for low pay, much different.

If Hoppes was pure of intentions, without a boss' mentality that would give demerits to someone who could only give an honest 8 hrs (or 10 or 12) or needed enough pay to buy vs. rent, then I stand corrected.

I agree. He is really good and was used a lot in other papers.

    Re Hoppes comments

Someone who is willing to cover whatever whenever is valuable.

Of course, I'd say about 90 percent of sports writers fall into this category.

    90 percent? I think that's a bit high.

Definitely think 90 percent is high. A lot of writers don't want to be bothered with preps.

I agree with the consensus. Nothing wrong with the post.

May you all be praised for your willingness to work endless hours for very little pay then.

    It's the new normal.

Except for the praise part. I see that now.
