It's a sick world, Apex. Too many people do not understand the terms "taste" and "class." Our best to you guys in the wake of the Eve Carson mess.
I just found out this morning that my brother Jack and his wife knew her and her parents pretty well. They're going to the funeral today.
Blaming NCLB for a homicide is a hell of stretch. But the blame Bush crowd might have a better shot pinning the Auburn murder on him. http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/stories/2008/03/09/auburnarrest_0309_web11.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab
No, but the behavior of general population is/will be changing. Can you trace each case? No. But if the violent crime rates rises 7%, in the next five years, just at random pick seven crimes out of 100 that would have not happened.
From reading the various coverage, it seems like about half the town of Athens knew her. For all the stick that Clarke County schools get, some of it deserved but much of it not, she was a shining example of all that is right with them. She likely had the opportunity to go to the Academy, but for whatever reason she didn't, and Clarke Central was a better place for it. All the best to you, as well, Apex. Too many of those on here know what it's like to cover an event like that, and it becomes particularly difficult when you're also mourning. And sadly, there are idiots the world over. I'd like to think there's some informal group of them somewhere that just devotes itself to starting shit on comment threads.
Just FYI ... After a raid in Durham today, Chapel Hill cops have a "person of interest" in custody. He looks like the guy from the surveillance photo from the convenience store (though not so much like the ATM guy). http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/ From what I've heard--two types of guns used in the killing--there is probably another suspect out there.
If this is the guy, I seriously hope he "resisted" during the arrest. I hope they are lining up the worst public defender they have for him.
Turns out they have more than one person ... only one was caught on camera early this morning... Shortly before 11 a.m., police escorted two people with their heads covered from the Chapel Hill Police Department, put them in a car and drove away, WRAL's Amanda Lamb reports.
I talked to my dad last night and he said the funeral was amazing, both in terms of the turnout and the many, many, many wonderful things that were said about Eve. He and my mom knew Eve's parents a little socially, they'd basically been at some of the same dinner parties a few times, but he said the murder had affected him far more deeply than he ever would have imagined. My dad is on the UGA Foundation board that interviews candidates for UGA's Foundation Fellowships, basically the absolute best academic scholarships you can get at Georgia, and he loves those interviews because the candidates are so amazing and so clearly eager to go out and make a difference in the world. Eve, he said, was obviously very much the same.
Re: Sad time for the Tar Heels (one suspect charged in Duke murder, too) This is turning out to be a crazy case that, maybe, will help initiate some much-needed changes in Durham. This morning, they took into custody the second suspect in the UNC SBP murder. Police have also charged the kid--he's 17--in connection with the January murder of a 29-year-old Duke graduate student from India. http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/2569358/
Jones might need to cross Durham off of his list. Both should be charged as adults. It's sad the police could not find the kid after the Duke murder. I suggest watching The First 48 on A&E when you get a chance, and you will see what the police are faced with on a daily basis.
