Salary History

They always know their range. Where you fall is negotiable.

 

This is a very good formula. I'm definitely going to follow it next time I have to give a salary history. And I agree that companies want to know so they can see they can get you cheaper than they were originally planning on spending. Trust me I know b/c it happened to me once. Don't ever tell them exactly what you're currently making. You'll screw yourself.

 

Your salary history is no one's business---certainly not a prospective employer for whom you don't even work yet.

Rememeber the old rule of thumb of job search and then salary discussion---he who gives a number first, "loses."

 

I'm not saying tell them what you're making. I'm just saying when it's time to negotiate, have a number higher than what you're currently getting paid.

I'm not sure I made that clear way up above.
