The bulk of the book is committed to the 2002 team. You don't win 20 in a row without starting pitching that is at least decent. Obviously Zito, Hudson and Mulder need to stop the other guys from scoring runs. Not unimportant. And if they weren't extremely vital, why have the A's been barely worth a shit since they left?

The stat guys frown on stolen bases. Or, if I remember it right, they're OK with them if you can steal at a 68 percent clip or something or other. Well, yeah. That's like saying you're all right with getting laid tonight if the odds are good.

The light should always be green.

  5. Hence me saying it was a major flaw in Lewis' polemic.

But I'm just saying the A's got some pretty good offense out of a small payroll.

how much of that was because of giambi?

  7. Fair question.

  8. Pretty sure those A's teams had (at some point) Miguel Tejada, a healthy Eric Chavez, Ramon Hernandez, Johnny Damon, Jermaine Dye, a still-useful Ben Grieve and Matt Stairs when he still had a shit-ton of power.

Those teams was loaded, Giambi or no.

i like giambi, always have. i think he was a beane guy from the beginning because of his eye and obp, but the steroid use has to be questioned. a good player made great? a great player made slightly better? i don't know.

A good player who had a few great years because of the juice.
    Never was a great player.

  12. A good player who had a great year? He was ridiculous his MVP year (2000)?
