Just got back from seeing it.
    THAT. WAS. AWESOME.
Ledger was as good as the hype, and one of the best translations of a character from comic to film I've ever seen. People were laughing at a lot of his antics, from the first "magic trick" to the scene outside the hospital, but that's part of what the Joker is. Sometimes, you laugh until you die.
And the voice ... my god, is it creepy. Great Joker laugh, and I'm going to be licking my lips all weekend after seeing that.
Also loved some of the little touches ... the cameo by the Scarecrow, the references to Dark Knight Returns with the Sons of Batman thing, and the main plot that shadowed The Killing Joke. All of it combined flawlessly.

My only gripe was the ending. Won't give anything away, but the wrapup with the Joker was perfect. The denouement with Two-Face/Dent? Meh. I'd have been OK if they had left him out there on the loose and finished it with the Joker part.
All in all, though, this is going down as a classic. I may have to sneak away on my day off Monday and catch a matinee without the wife. She was "overstimulated" (her words) by the 2:15 mark, and looked like someone had beaten her with a wiffle bat when we were leaving the theater.

Oh, and Jay...didn't catch on that you were joking earlier. Sorry. I was paranoid about spoilers. Had made it up to this afternoon without catching any of them, and I thought you had blown a biggie out of the water six hours before I stepped in the theater.
For those wondering -- there's nothing but a long list of names in the credits. Move along. Nothing to see here.

The hospital scene has been burned into my mind's eye. Damn, why did Ledger have to die? There's not a person in Hollywood that will be able to step into that role. Just lay the Oscar on his grave now and be done with it.

The only thing I didn't like about the movie was the way Bale talked when he was Batman. By the end, I was laughing every time he opened his mouth.

    Loved the rest of it.

I got over it pretty quickly, but it was a complaint that I've had about every Batman since Keaton. Keaton sounded serious when he was in costume, but it never sounded like he was doing a "Batman voice." Everyone since has their "Bruce Wayne voice" and their "Batman voice." It's a little offputting, but it didn't detract from the fantastic move a bit.

Just got out of an 11:20 showing in Denver. This film never drags, never gets boring, and will keep you guessing till the end. Go see it. Soon.

So what do you guys think? Will it be able to hold off Mamma Mia! and open at #1?

    :)

The only way Dark Knight would have been better is if the Joker slaughtered people while singing Abba tunes.

I guess he should change his name, then.

Mainstream audience + Joker = "HA! HA!"

I had some pretty high expectations for this and TDK surpassed most of them. Gotta love some of the Easter eggs Nolan put out there: The nod to Selina Kyle when Fox talking about the new suit (Cats! for the fanboys!); Barbara Gordon..

I think the "magic trick" was pretty damn shocking. There was laughter after that, but it was kind of nervous, shocked, holy-shit laughter, I thought.
