I think the Academy could deal with a Sci-Fi movie or fantasy movie, but a comic book movie might be a bit much.

Other than Return of the King winning best picture, I'm trying to think of any time one has won an acting or one of the bigger awards. I'm sure it's happened, I just can't think of it.

That's why I called them cousins. It's that fantasy/adventure/geek genre. Not exactly the same -- not by a long shot -- but it gets the biggest rise from a similar fan base.

And believe me, ROTK was a body-of-work award, rather than for that standalone film.

The reviews have been almost rhapsodic so far, most saying TDK is dramatically better than "Begins", which was one of the best-reviewed superhero films ever made.

Several have commented on the running time, 2:32, "flying by," lifting it into "Godfather" territory of epic-length movies that fully justify their duration.

And they've been almost unanimous that Ledger is amazing -- consigning the Jack Nicholson Joker to the archive vault along with Cesar Romero.

My only concern with this movie is if it could possibly live up to the hype. My expectations have become ridiculously high.

However, the Academy couldn't muster to give one acting award (or nomination, for that matter) to anyone in the cast for their roles. At the VERY least, Sean Astin should have gotten the Supporting Actor nod for RotK. He was fabulous in that movie.

I thought it was highway robbery. I can't remember anyone who has been nominated for an Oscar from the sci-fi/fantasy category, which is a shame because there's a lot of good acting that goes into making people believe that not only are you not human, but you don't live in this world.

Check out some of Frank Miller's Batman comics... Dark Knight Returns" or "Batman: Year One".

    Incredibly well-written.

    EDIT:

I probably should point out that I'm not trying to compare Miller's work with Tolkien's. I'm just trying to point out that some comics also double as good literature.

I can't remember the last time I was this excited for a movie.

An excellent point. Sometimes critics and awards voters forget that these things are meant as entertainment. Some people miss out on a lot while they have their noses up in the air.

Wasn't Ian McKellen nominated for supporting actor for Fellowship of the Ring, just as Alec Guinness was nominated for supporting actor for Star Wars?

On fantasy films getting recognized: Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark were nominated for Best Picture.
