Again, take a look at what else was out when Titanic made it's run. It came out in December '97, which meant it had to fend off Mouse Hunt and Tomorrow Never Dies on it's opening weekend. Eh and Eh.

Expand that to include all the movies it went up against for the 15-week run and the biggest challengers are Spice World, Half Baked, The Wedding Singer, US Marshals, and City of Angels.

That kind of run isn't likely to happen again.

I mean, shit, not one movie released in the first four months of 1998 made more than $90 million. That tells you something.

By comparison, TDK has "gone up" Mamma Mia, The Mummy 3, Step Brothers and the Pinapple Express in its first four weeks alone and all four will finish at at least $120 by the end of their respective runs.

    Mummy 3?

    Mamma Mia?

    AND Step Brothers?

    Holy crap, what a gauntlet!

    Sigh.

How many of those does it take to challenge one, say . . . Wizard of Oz?

I assume you're talking about Wizard of Oz and that movie sucks my balls.

I hated it as a kid, hate it now and will probably only enjoy it as I lay on my deathbed and prepare to exhale my final breathe upon this earth. In that moment, I'll realize I'll never have to listen to someone say how good that flick was again. They should go back and rename it Wizard of Overrated.

As for TDK, I've said it before and I'll say it again, chop it up any way you want to, that kind of money in four weeks is fucking impressive. And to crack the top three of the US Box Office is pretty damn good.

Ok, Mr. Movie Buff. Name me the big challenge Titanic faced.

Name me the big challenge Star Wars faced during any of its incarnations.

I'm not saying TDK was the end-all, be-all of cinema, in fact I'd argue that without Ledger's death the number isn't nearly as good, but how can you not give it some loving?

Oh, I get it. You're the type of person who says...."Well, back in my day...."

    NO ONE ELSE ANSWER.

schieza, how old do you think Piotr is?

  6. 'Zainc,

I agree what TDK has done is impressive. And you're welcome to the minority opinion of not liking The Wizard of Oz.
But that doesn't mean it's not a beloved film by virtually the entire English-speaking world.

Oh no I'm not going that far out on a limb. I understand people love it. They loved GWTW and Casablanca too. I get that. I'm just saying that I thought WOZ sucked.

I'm going to guess late 20's, early 30's?

    God, you're obtuse.

I mean, honestly. I should have learned my lesson before about attempting discussion. A refusal to pull one's head out of one's ass does not equal "integrity," nor does it mean "having the courage of one's convictions." It just means you have your head in your ass.

You obviously haven't read anything I've written about Dark Knight. All I'm saying is that the numbers, while very nice, aren't as historically impressive as you think they are. Very good movie, whose rise on the money charts is helped by rising prices. Pretty simple.

Then why would you pull the "back in my day" bullshit?

    Attitude. All attitude.

    That's exactly what I'm saying :)

I'm just also adding that $400+ in four weeks is pretty damn good.

Oh, and also that Titanic went up against shit.

    And lastly that WOOZ sucked.
