I thought of another one from these parts, the Taylorsville Tartars. I once wrote a headline – and my editor actually let me get away with it – that said, "Eagles make sauce of Tartars."

Could have used a "hammer" that said "TARTAR CONTROL"

A few from Alabama (for whatever reason, the Christian schools down here have the most creative nicknames):

Alabama School for the Deaf Silent Warriors
    Alexandria Valley Cubs
    Ariton Purple Cats
Paul W. Bryant Stampede (couldn't be named the Bears because there was already a Black Bears in the school system and they have rules against that)
    Calvary Christian Watchmen
    Coosa Christian Conquerers
    Evangel Christian Lightning
    Frisco City Whippets
    Hayes Pacesetters
    Highland Home Flying Squadron
    Holt Ironmen

    LeFlore Rattlers
    McIntosh Demons

As a Richland Bomber grad, I can safely say our awesome logo is STILL a source of extreme controversy in the area. When I played football there, the coach at the time banned the mushroom cloud logo from the helmets. It's back now...

One of our shirts is in the Smithsonian in D.C....

    Close.

Black Bears was the nickname for the old Tuscaloosa High (which Bryant actually attended briefly in order to get his credits in order to be admitted at Alabama). When THS and Druid High (Dragons) were merged into Central High School to settle a desegrwgation suit, part of the court order decreed that no school in the system could use the former nicknames.

I knew it was something like that. Thanks for the clarification.

I do know that Central's football stadium is on Black Bear Drive.

Being a former Yooper, it was nice to see this thread start with U.P. names.

A few more from "da U.P., eh?"

Marquette Redettes (the girls nickname, the boys is Redmen)
Grand Marias Polar Bears (I think the school closed though)
    Bessemer Speedboys (and Speedgirls)
    Menominee Maroons
    West Iron Co. Wykons
    Escabana Eskymos

    Other Michigan towns:
Goodrich Martians (and they have played Vassar, so the Vulcans invaded the Martians)
    Bad Axe Hatchets

My buddy was SE in Freeport, Ill., so I have a Pretz shirt!
I think there is also a Illinois town named Polo, the mascot is the Marcos

    Other schools in Indiana:
Southmont Mounties (yes, like Canadian police)
    Crawfordsville Athenians

    Grants Pass Cavemen
    South Eugene Axemen

    Klamath Union Pelicans
    Squalicum Storm

To think all we have yet to sacrifice in the name of political correctness.

Louisiana, which might have the record for most teams with nicknames of Rebels, Tigers, Bulldogs, Lions, Panthers, Hornets and Eagles...

    anyway, here's a few others:

    Archbishop Chapelle Chipmunks
    Crowley Gents
    Cabrini Crescents
    Academy of Sacred Heart Firebirds
    Ascension Catholic Blue Gators
    Dutchtown Griffins
South Plaquemines Hurricanes (only appropriate, what with Katrina haven't resulted in consoliation of several schools in that area for the 'new' SP).

Speaking of Indiana, I'm sure in the aftermath of 9-11 the muckety-mucks for the Pendleton Heights Arabians went overboard to note that the team was named after horses, not Mooslims.

Although given how often Pendleton appears on MSNBC's "Lockup," the high school should change its name to something prison-related: "Shivs," "Punks," "Wardens," "Holes," "Solitaries," "Lockdowns," "Caged Heat," etc.
