Scoop Jackson vs. Whitlock (round 6)

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Almost_Famous, Dec 29, 2006.

  1. I would note for the record that JW has not responded to an actual argument with an actual argument in about a page and a half. I would also like to note for the record that s'bruh, apparently, is from Pluto.

  2. big ragu, why do we have to play a game... why not stick to what i actually said about jackson?

on page 2, he came off like a bojangling idiot. why is it necessary for you to define it as me calling him an uncle tom? honestly. scoop offered 2,000 words on my blog interview. he then came back 4 or 5 months later with 50 or so words on the same topic. can i not poke a little fun at his latest attempt to redefine my beatdown.

  3. fb, your new stance is "cute." you don't like either of us. that's cute.

  4. Wait a minute, I'm still hung up on something from two pages back: Scoop is 40-something? He's that old? That makes it even sadder. Sportsbruh, clear this up, before I thought you were a Gen Xer like myself who would eventually evolve into a decent writer. Now my dreams are shattered.

  5. And one other thing: I would agree that Scoop is handling this - at least publicly - a lot more civilly than Jason. That doesn't change who's actually right to begin with.

alma, the beauty of a message board is that i don't have to respond to every critic with a different opinion. i don't have to tell you why the woman's opinion is stupid. you already know it, but you're playing the SportsJournalists.com whitlock game...

Like I said, I thought the blog post was a sincere, fairly serious argument about the concept and usage of bojangling. You think it's stupid, and, apparently, I already know why. Well, I don't.

BTW...nice of you to fall on that sharp pen of yours in an effort to improve the writing of scoop jackson.

JW, No game intended. Was just telling you how I perceive the situation. You agreed above--you jusr said you feel that on Page 2, he comes off as a "bojangling" idiot. Your definition on this thread for that was, "Black people -- rappers, actors, broadcasters, writers -- who adopt/revel in/promote a stereotypical, negative ghetto persona for the express purpose of collecting a check from a TV network, music company, movie studio or media outlet.' "

I can see the differences between your definition and the definition of an Uncle Tom, but they aren't too far off from each other. In both cases, you're accusing a black guy of not being true to himself--in order to ingratiate himself to whites (in your case, TV networks, music companies, movie studios or media outlets, which are controlled by whites). It's sort of the veiled implication I took from what you wrote.

And I am sure I am not alone. Just about every black guy I know would be offended by that accusation. Some would be ready to kick your ass. I'd guess--although you may say otherwise--that you yourself would come out fighting if someone accused you of being an Uncle Tom or a Bojangler or whatever similar term you want to use in print.

So at the very least, you started this thing by getting nasty--in sort of a personal way--with the guy.

I guess the question is how he responded. I never saw the 2,000 word response you mention. Can you link to it? All I saw was the 50 words posted on this thread. And in that response, he actually came back at you in a restrained, reasonable way. You accused him of calling you an Uncle Tom earlier on the thread for calling your attack black-on-black crime. But that isn't a fair assessment. Calling it "black-on-black" crime was pretty accurate, and it was a very tame response. Calling someone a "bojangler," which before you defined it, conjured an image of Kingfish from the Amos and Andy Show, is hardly innocuous. It's mean-spirited.

  8. Ragu for two!

  9. dude, re-read all of this thread and ask yourself what point are you trying to make and is it all that enlightening.

    1. jason whitlock can be mean-spirited.

    2. jason whitlock called scoop a bojangling idiot and scoop has a right to be offended.

dude, i would cop to this every day of the week and twice on sundays. what is your point? what exactly are you trying to accomplish?

let me tell you what i wanted to accomplish. i don't want anyone writing in a mainstream publication/outlet ever again that black kids have a better chance of playing in the nba than being sports writers. that was my snapping point with scoop. now, if someone wants to write that again in a mainstream, supposed-to-be-taken-somewhat-seriously outlet, i want them to know that they will be properly clown-suited. if that makes me a bad guy, if that means i can't argue on espn anymore, i'm willing to live with that. i thought it through before i started stitching the clown suit. i'm comfortable with my decision, what was accomplished and all of the ramifications.

what do you want, big ragu? more than likely, i'll give it to you.

How in the hell can a 500lb crystal meth white girl chasing reject offer advice. Thank god ESPN valued Scoop over you.
