Screw the general baseball thread, this deserves its own for history...Pirates!

I agree. I don't think there is any correlation between veteran leadership and winning anyway. If you're winning, then magically, the veterans in your clubhouse get some nice interviews with the beat guys about how well they're leading. If you're losing, then no one gives a shit. You never hear about losing teams with good veteran leadership.

Taillon, Allie and Heredia are all due for 2013 or 2014 call ups, and hopefully the current bats will have matured and still be Pirates when they arrive.

Yeah, and when Midre Cummings and Abraham Nunez and Will Pennyfeather all hit their stride around the mid-1990s, they're going to be right back in the playoffs.

Sorry 93Devil ... we want the same thing, but I don't have faith in this organization to get serious about winning. How many of the current guys do you think will still be there in two or three years? They overvalue their prospects and won't part with them. They won't pay what it costs for established talent. What is McCutchen going to cost them? Considering their miserly spending habits, I'm guessing they'll let Maholm walk to save the cash necessary to pay McCutchen. And when they feel like McCutchen and their chance at winning have topped out, they'll trade him.

As fun as it was to watch them improve this year -- which they have, since you can't do much worse than last year -- hanging around .500 is the best they can hope for without spending more money. Or without having more success in evaluating their talent.

McCutchen should be the Pirates' Joe Mauer.

They have guys right now in the minors throwing 95 and 100 MPH. I cannot remember this ever happening.

I'm betting they are hoping he is not their Joe Mauer, given how much Mauer's play has fallen off and the injuries he has had since he got that big contract.

My apologies for creating this thread and like our government, giving false hope and change.

And printdust was so close to making an actual good post on this board. Then he had to ruin it by being himself. ::)

I'm sure there are still posters ready to line up and talk about the Pirates' progress. They are spending more, though that is a relative thing, but they are still a long way from being good. There may have been positives this season, but there have also been some steps backward. The disastrous season Pedro Alvarez had is a very bad sign for the future.

In two years the Pirate farm system will be one of the best in baseball.

That is 100 times better than what they have had in the past.
