Hard to tell. Morale here has been in steady decline since August. Some of us were actually a little pleased with the buyouts because some of the people who're taking them checked out years ago.

The thing we're pissed about is positions won't be filled. More work, less bodies and an ever-increasing demand for better quality.

But hey, at least the online department is fully staffed.

JRC's buyout deal for the dozens of employees they've whacked over the last couple of weeks, including several 30+ year employees:

"Turn in your key and get out."

No health care, no severance pay, no nothing. "Pack up and get out."

I'll echo what was said earlier about positions not being filled. There's going to be some "restructuring of the newsroom" here after it's determined who's leaving. I'd say it's a decent deal for those who take it (one week's pay for every six months up to one year max with a max of two years health coverage). I don't think it's a surprise this is happening. Maybe that it took so long. Everyone else is doing it. It certainly will be interesting to see how things look in about three months after it's determined who's going and who's staying.

In Knoxville, only four in the newsroom are eligible. One person has already declined and it's doubtful the other three will accept.

Correction on that: They don't allow you to go back to your desk and pack up your stuff -- they escort you straight from the building, and don't allow you back in. They say they'll pack up your personal stuff and ship it to you.

After they've run through it to decide what they want to keep, of course.

So it's not "pack up and get out" -- it's just "get out."

Once again: no severance, no pay for unused vacation or personal days, no health care, no nothing.

Young fool, only now, at the end, do you find the true meaning of "at-will employment."

    "Get out."
