    Loved this quote:

Did he actually say that with a straight face?

    FUCKTARD!!!!!!

I have truly run out of superlatives to describe these fucks -- all of them -- but for now, Scripps.

They talk about local content, but how many of the people working in Corpus Christi will have any idea of what's going on in the other three places? From a sports standpoint, I can see opportunity for numerous mistakes simply because the won't know things like team nicknames, district designations, which programs are traditionally strong or weak, which games are longtime rivalries and need to be played bigger, etc. (Of course, many of those same mistakes get made anyway.)

Many of the high schools and colleges covered by San Angelo, Abilene and Wichita Falls compete against each other on a regular basis (all three cities have colleges in the Lone Star Conference) and content can be shared among those papers. Corpus Christi has no connection other than being in the same corporate family.

Doing the national pages and things like MLB, NFL, college football and NBA makes some sense, but the papers won't have the same amount of space for that on a daily basis. There are often times pro and college roundups get squeezed into whatever space is left after all the local sports coverage. It won't take long for readers to realize if there is less local content.

And wait until you've got a bunch of people editing copy and designing pages for Abilene, Wichita Falls and San Angelo who have never so much as stepped foot in any of said places.

Every time I think Scripps can't sink any lower they go and prove me wrong.

Exactly. Same thing hampered us. You cannot be in Corpus and have the intimate knowledge of those other areas and it will show in the product. You can bank on that. I doubt the PTB give a crap, tho.

It's funny. Somebody here (Charleston, SC) said it would be like us doing pages for Summerville and Beaufort and Myrtle Beach.

My response: It would be a lot more like us doing pages for Tampa, Savannah and Raleigh.

The ONLY thing those places share is a state border. That's it.

And Corpus is the LEAST like the others in the "hub."

What he said. LANG puts all of this to shame.

And you can bet more type of this stuff will follow.

Agreed. I know Freedom does some of it as well in Texas.

The only difference I'm seeing with LANG compared to this, though, is the sheer distances and lack of connections between the papers.

It would be easier to be a copy editor of multiple papers if they are all in the same area, but when the distances are all greater than 350 miles, well, that is nuts.

Plus, Corpus Christi is about as different from San Angelo as can be.

Like the difference between San Bernardino and the Valley.

    Oh.

    Wait.

Well, I'll admit my California geography isn't great.

I apologize. I'm really not trying to argue who has it worse. I'm just saying it sucks for those in Texas even if others are already doing it.

    Fair?

Not trying to bust your balls, 'gola; my only point was that people were acting like this was some shocking idea that Scripps just came out of the blue with. It's not. These same points have been made in LANG threads for a few years. Just sounded, to me, like people's heads were about to explode when they heard of this.

But MileHigh's right: The difference in coverage areas for the San Bernardino Sun -- which believe it or not, still delivers papers in Needles on the Nevada border -- and the Pasadena Star-News (let alone the Daily News and Torrance/Long Beach) are just as vast as the ones in Texas being discussed here. But the same staff is putting out both papers right now, and have been off and on since mid-2007.

All of these papers were competitors until Singleton snatched them up and began consolidating a decade ago. There was very little connection between them, just like as in Texas.

It's shitty for all involved. But let's not act like it's new; that was really the point I was making, is all.

I'm one of the folks going nuts, and it's just because it's the old stomping grounds. That's all.
