I went to Festival last summer because my daughter plays. Thinking as a sportswriter, I decided it is impossible to cover. Unless a Reno-area team wins its age group (not likely) there would be no interest for the paper's readership. I saw the above-referenced story and figured that was the best way to go: This is why there are a bunch of girls in volleyball uniforms all over town, there are 10,000 of 'em and this is how much money city officials think will be spent in the city over the course of the event. I thought the paper handled it the right.

I think the RGJ is one of the most profitable Gannett papers so you would think if they were a rational company they'd be spreading the wealth to the employees...
But, like Buckeye said, it IS Gannett so who knows.
On the plus side you'd get to work with Guy Clifton. Guy is the best Rodeo man probably in the entire state of Nevada. He's a cool dude.

Knew a couple of people who went to Reno (news-side) about eight years ago. Never heard any real complaints, but they left after a couple of years.

Chuck went to the Door County Advocate in Wisconsin, which is another Gannett paper. It's one place you'd make a move from a daily to a weekly and afford a lot of house for not a lot of money. They call it the Cape Cod of the Midwest, and for good reason.

That's pretty common for Gannett papers. They call the position an SE or "manager" but trust me, they expect you at both budget meetings AND to paginate the last text box. Five years later max, you burn out, or they sell you to an even worse pack of rats.

  11. The Reno paper has had five sports editors in the last four years. Take that for whatever you think it's worth.
