SEC suspends Florida-Arkansas officiating crew

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by Steak Snabler, Oct 21, 2009.

  1. nope, different crew. (funny how there's never an apology when it keeps the smallest school in the SEC out of a bowl game.)

Technically, losing to Middle Tennessee State at home kept Vandy out of a bowl game that year.

The penalty came with the score 35-34 and Vandy about to go for two. There's no guarantee they would have made it.

  3. True and true, but Vanderbilt had scored two TDs in about 60 seconds against Florida and had a hell of a lot of momentum. Would have been nice to at least see them get the chance to go for two (which they were doing - they weren't playing for OT). Yes, I'm a Vanderbilt fanboy loser.

To get the thread back on track, I don't ever remember more than about one statement from all conference offices combined, per year, that an officiating crew erred about anything. In the past couple weeks we've had two separate admissions from the SEC and another from the Pac-10. It does make you wonder about the fix being on somewhere, especially when you see who's benefiting from controversial calls (unbeaten teams and Notre Dame).

Litke writes the suspension will fuel the conspiracy theorists' fires ...

The Pac-10 is tired of always being overshadowed by the SEC.
So the conference announced yesterday that there were three blown calls by the Pac-10 crew in the USC-Notre Dame game ... all against the Trojans.
ND's fake field goal play was an illegal substitution violation. There were two late hits called against Taylor Mays, neither were late and both were legal.

It wasn't a screw job. Bennett did shimmy for a second - he caught himself and stopped quickly, but the kid did it. The celebration rule sucks, but it's not like it didn't happen.

That call was stinkin' atrocious. The Phantom Excessive Celebration on Earl Bennett after the game-tying touchdown.

If Vandy had the extra point at the 3 instead of the 18, no doubt in my mind Cutler & Crew would have gone for 2 and the win -- and, the way they were moving the ball that night (having already put up 35 at Florida)... possibly won.

Kudos to Danielson for pointing out that Cody took his helmet off in celebration while the play still wasn't dead, meaning Alabama could have been penalized 15 yards, giving Tennessee a much easier kick with an untimed down to finish the game.

Time to suspend another SEC crew ...

What I haven't heard anyone say about the Georgia penalty is LSU returned the kickoff to around midfield to set up its game-winning touchdown. Georgia had a chance to return its kickoff for striking-distance field position after the celebration call against LSU, and didn't. You still have to make plays.

Oh, no question. And Georgia gave up the game-winning touchdown in two plays. But there's a big difference between needing only a field goal to win on a kickoff with 62 seconds left like LSU had and Georgia needing a touchdown to win on a kickoff with 42 seconds left.

Guess we can add Florida's INT return for a touchdown tonight to the list of questionable calls this season.

MSU coach asks SEC to suspend replay official. Think Slive might have left his can of worms open?
