By looking at the verses surrounding it and the historical situation ...

    The American Muslim (TAM)
Myths About "The Verse of the Sword" | Qur’anic Studies

But that wouldn't fit your #narrative.

But we can ignore world history for the past quarter-century and counting.

There are apologists who will try and explain away these calls to violence by "explaining" their "context".

OK. Great. But, this isn't an isolated verse. Violence is called for throughout the Koran:

    The Quran's Verses of Violence

Mohammad led a life of violence. (And pedophilia.)

There is no Southern Baptist hierarchy for him to be a part of. And I'm not sure what you mean by theologian here, although he does have a divinity degree (as well as a law degree from Yale, which I didn't know).

One minute it's Islam doesn't allow interpretation of the meaning of the Koranic verses. The next, people who do so are apologists rather than scholars.

Keep fucking that chicken ... errr, pounding that #narrative, YF.

OK. So, some ordained minister, who became famous said something. So what?

He's not a theologian, and isn't setting doctrine. He's also not saying that Christians are bound by Leviticus, is he?

Sure, let's start by asking the half million Iraqis who were killed by American forces.
