I'm not miserable yet. But I will be if and when the layoff reaper gets me. Because there is no next job.

I actually have a second job in journalism, for a smallish magazine, and so far it's worked out great. I mostly do stuff with the Web site, so a lot of it is over-the-phone, and then I go to events when I can make it. Come to think of it, I actually like that job better than my "real" job.

Been looking for several months with no luck. Would love to find something over night for 4-5 hours after I get off at the paper.

And don't realize that went a shot goes up ... the three-second count resets.

    atta boy.

actually, picking up an app today. hours fit my schedule pretty well, actually. so hoping for the best.

(seems so odd that I'm actually hoping I can get a second job and that, if I did, it would fall into "the best.")

Keep your eyes and ears open for friends, colleagues, church members, etc. who say they are writing a book. Offer to help them---edit the manuscript and take a few hours to learn Quark so you can typeset their book, too. All you need to know is Chicago Style for books (vs. AP for papers), Quark and basic typesetting rules and suddenly you are quite marketable.

Yeah, not something you just jump right into. But once you do a good job for one, word of mouth helps you out. You can do ALL the work between 10 p.m. and midnight or weekends or whatever fits for you, a little bit at a time, and average around $30-$40 hour, but you don't charge by the hour. Charge by the project.

Now a completely different tact---I've got an editor who does karoake (sp?) on weekends and makes good bucks, although couldn't tell you exact amount.
