The place that put honeymooning on the map: Niagara Falls.
I'd do the Canadian side, lots of casinos, nice hotel rooms.
Then I'd make my way east on US Rt. 20, Finger Lakes wine trail, then Cooperstown.
You could fly into Buffalo and fly out of Albany.

May as well throw in the Maine coastline for a nice trifecta.

  6. Wow, all kinds of suggestions so far, many thanks!

We're getting married at Carolina Beach, NC so OBX would be a convenient option.

We also got engaged on Tybee Island--right off Savannah--so Savannah/Charleston/St. Aug also would be fun.

We had discussed NYC and Balmur last night.

Bermuda and the Caribbean? Meh. We looked at a few cruises going there but neither of those destinations are too high on our list--and we want the honeymoon to be somewhere both of us would really like to go, rather than a backdrop for giggity.

And no, I'm not marrying into the Bush family or anyone anywhere near said tax bracket. We're also paying for the ceremony and such ourselves (reception's taken care of), so we have to be a bit budget conscious.

Try to get one of those time-share resorts in Florida near Orlando to call and offer you a deal. Say you're interested in the offer, but don't want to go to the meeting/talk/sales pitch. By law, they can't charge you more than a fixed amount extra (not sure if its $50 or $100). Its how my wife & I saved some money on our honeymoon -- they called when we were planning and gave us an offer. I said it sounded good, but didn't want to go to the sales pitch because it was my honeymoon. The response was that by law, they have to make me a similar offer and what they offered was only $50 or $75 more.

Cooperstown, NY has a beautiful, beautiful lake.

Any of the NY Finger Lakes are a solid choice.

Pay attention, doofus, he said May. What does May have to do with fall foliage?

However, if you are interested in Northern NE, Bar Harbor, Maine, is wonderful in May/June.

Well, we were going to honeymoon on Key West, but we switched to Charleston. It was terrific, we've been back a bunch of times, and Charleston and San Diego are my two favorite vacation destinations. We were just there in early May and the ocean temp was tolerable (and I like it warm).

Charleston offers a bunch of options. For the honeymoon we rented a condo at the beach on Isle of Palms. I can't remember what we paid, but it wasn't ridiculous in early spring or we wouldn't have stayed there. It's just a basic condo on the beach, nothing upscale except the location:

Between Charleston and IOP is Mount Pleasant, which has really my favorite place to eat in the Charleston area. I'm not saying it's the best restaurant -- it isn't by a long shot, Charleston is a GREAT restaurant town -- I just love this place's lack of pretentiousness (plywood floors) and the simple and tasty Southern food:

This place is not cheap, but it's very good. There's one in Charleston, too, but the IOP restaurant is on the water:

We stayed downtown on one trip and picked the Vendue. It is expensive, but it's in the heart of the main restaurant area in a very old section of the city. Really an awesome, upscale place and an excellent choice if that's what you're into. High-quality beds and bedding. No pool, though:

No doubt you could find better places in Charleston than this, but we enjoyed this place. The crab cocktail is worth what they charge for it:

Really, my favorite place to stay (actually anywhere) is a pretty generic Holiday Inn high rise on the ocean at Folly Beach. The clientele seems a bit redneck, but generally friendly and no trouble, and I've never experienced even a mild hassle from staff or guests, just a very laid-back good time. Every room has a balcony that overlooks the beach and unless it's really hot out, we sleep with the sliding glass door open and hear the waves all night. We've always had a room on a high floor, which I recommend. Never any problem with noise from other guests and the rooms are clean and comfortable (but not cheap):

Folly Beach is a pretty laid-back beach town. There's like one main street (unless we somehow missed all the action) with a bunch of sanely priced, indy restaurants on it. Last spring we ate at this place twice:

I like clothes and Ben Silver is pretty special. Prices are completely absurd, but I've been in town in August a couple times when BS has its warehouse sale -- and still I've bought only one shirt. It's my favorite shirt, but there's absolutely no way I'd pay full price for it. But it's a nice place to look:
