Probably a stretch, indeed. It just seems very weird this whole thing. Never once have we heard of issues with Richards and then this just explodes out of nowhere.

Hell, we haven't heard anything from Richards since his last show bombed a few years ago.

I'll give Rodriguez this: his line of "People came here expecting to see Kramer, but instead they got Mark Furman" was mildly amusing.

"People came here expecting to see Kramer, but instead they got Mark Furman" (and a Jew to boot!!)

How is Rodriguez any better than Richards? Or Gibson?

The Letterman apology was difficult to watch... I agree with AF, I don't think he seemed sorry at all... I'm not sure he even gets on to Letterman without Seinfeld's push. This is somebody who has done just about nothing for the last five years. I get the sense that Letterman told Seinfeld, "Look, I have to ask you about Richards..." and then Seinfeld said, "Well, then I'll get that racist asshole on here to answer for himself..."

Michael Richards is not Mel Gibson... He's not getting a Diane Sawyer or Barbara Walters special... If he's lucky he can get on Extra!

Richards is a racist and an asshole but is the black patron a racist for calling him a "cracker"?

I just watched the apology on YouTube. Very hard to watch. Especially how the audience was laughing at the beginning.

    P.S. Afro Americans?

Eesh. That was uncomfortable. And the audience laffing was weird.

Hope he saved his money from Seinfeld.

I just watched the rant and then the apology immediately after (each a few times, again).

During the rant on stage, I really get the feeling he was trying make the word "nigger" shocking and funny, the way so many comics do, and succeed in doing so. Richards, as it's been said, is not a standup comic by trade and he failed miserably at this attempt. And we saw what happened.

During the Letterman spot, I got the feeling he was angry at "hecklers" and not neccessarily blacks. I think being a shitty stand up comic with no success after Seinfeld was getting to him. And the "rage" he speaks of has to do with that, not blacks, whites or hispanics or any other race or ethnicity.

I'm certainly not defending his actions or words, but that's just the feeling I get.

Basically, he was sucking (for years) and it was building up and whatever heckler spoke out that night was going to get a lambasting.

America is a place where you can reinvent yourself and recover from your mistakes if you make yourself humble (Pete? are you listening?) and express genuine remorse, but this is going to be hard for Richards to make right.

One reason is every so often someone has to pay for the sins of racism we all possess but keep hidden or under control or deal with in more socially acceptable and collective ways.

I'm still mad at Richards because he's the one blocking Fridays from being released on DVD.
