Funny you mentioned Detroit. Was there a bigger mid-major disappointment, aside from possibly Ohio, in the country than Detroit Mercy?

Ohio brought everyone back from last season's team that was amazing in March, but Ivo Baltic is a shell of his former self and Walter Offut forgot how to shoot. They crapped the bed in the MAC title game, but I still expected Detroit to be a lot better than they were.

It will be interesting to see what the Titans do against Arizona State in the first round.

North Texas was probably a bigger disappointment as a mid-major. They have a potential lottery pick in Tony Mitchell and brought back the two starting guards that were ineligible because of grades the year before, actually got some Top 25 preseason votes ... and utterly shit the bed. They hired the wrong coach after Johnny Jones left.

I disagree about Kentucky. I hate that team and its coach, but they have enough pure talent that things could click and they could go on a run. Talent is not Kentucky's problem...they have enough to win it. This season Kentucky lost by just three points at Louisville, a team a lot of people are picking to win it all. The Wildcats smoked Ole Miss, a tournament team, by over 10 as well as beating Missouri and Florida a little over a week ago.

While Kentucky has some awful losses, there is no way you can say, with any certainty, they would have had no shot at winning the title if they would have made the field. You just can't.

yes, perhaps i need rage counseling, but it's complete bullshit. winning an ncaa tournament game doesn't consist of beating a team with the same seed as you in a game that most brackets don't even make people pick.

Just because the NCAA says it's a game in the tournament doesn't make it so. Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows better.

The NCAA can't define its own tournament? All eight schools in the round of 68 into 64 (there's no real good name for it) are eligible to be national champs. They're in the damn tournament, so their games are tournament games.

Correct. St. Mary's can win the NCAA tournament. North Carolina A&T can win the NCAA tournament. Kentucky and Virginia and St. John's cannot.

And along those lines, too, shouldn't there be a separate thread for the NIT stuff? #threadpolice

All schools in automatic bid conferences have a chance to win it all.

If a school like ODU or VMI needs to do is keep winning once their conference tournament starts. Sure, they have many more games to win and it's a snowball's chance, but everyone in almost every conference has a chance to win it all if they keep winning.

It's about a nine or 10 game winning streak.
