The off-court stuff, players transferring and having success elsewhere, was damaging to Howland as well.
    But so far, no confirmation.

Big problem for UCLA is that Howland has two years left on a contract with a $2.3 mil buyout. Tough to recruit with a coach in limbo who hasn't really earned an extension.

Is there an "obvious" replacement for Howland?

I have so many old shops these days, I sometimes get confused myself.

    Had Wichita but had Butler.

Most wins (30) but fewest bonus points (20).

30-10 and in 8th place. I can win 7 games today -- Syracuse, Miami, Duke, Ohio State, Kansas, Florida, Indiana. Had G'town beating San Diego State. Oops.

UCLA put out a statement late last night saying Howland hadn't been fired. Hmm.

Yeah, I mean, he gone. No doubt. But just odd for them to come out and put out a release/statement say he hadn't been fired. They're clearly working on something.

If they do fire him, they should go get the Butler coach. Young, smart, handsome, wholesome -- and two Final 4's under his belt.

So is this the year Gregg Marshall makes his move from Wichita, to UCLA or another big-time job, or does he realize with Creighton out of the Valley that he has a pretty well-paved road to dominating the Valley and enjoying years of job security?

FGCU doesn't just knock off goliaths of the college game. They also make phenomenal rap videos in just one day.

I write this knowing that 30 seconds after I hit the post, it will be rendered completely inaccurate.

I wouldn't say that the Holy Trinity of Mid-Major Superstar Coaches would never leave for another job. What I would say is that they're a lot more likely to be a lot more discriminating about that next job. There's enough Keno Davises and Todd Lickliters and Jeff Capel IIIs who left good situations and walked right into buzzsaws to ensure that. If you're in a spot where everyone loves you, you get paid well and you have job security, do you cast that away for just any old job in the power conferences?

It's going to take a hell of a job to unearth Few, Smart or Stevens. UCLA is a storied program with a sketchy last few years, a sky-high set of expectations and the reality that unless they win back-to-back national titles without losing, they're going to be a distant third behind the Lakers and Lob City. It'll be like N.C. State squared.

Maybe UCLA backs up the Brinks truck and gets their man, which by reports is Smart. But the three have already turned down some pretty good opportunities in the past few years. Is this one really that much better once you get past the 11 national titles?

God, that Nicki Minaj impression was annoying.
