I imagine a plane carrying Shaka Smart is bound for Minneapolis in the very, very near future.

EDIT: Just saw the new CBB coaches thread. I suck.

Smart grew up in Wisconsin (Madison) and played college in Ohio. Have to figure the Big Ten would hold some allure.

But can Minnesota be much better than VCU? He already has a top-20 program and the key to the city. The only time Minnesota got to those heights, it came crashing down with the removal of a Final Four banner and the awarding of a Pulitzer Prize.

I agree on this. Minnesota SHOULD be a good job but it never winds up being at that level.

If you're going to leave a job where you "have it all" for the big time, make sure it's to a mid- to high-level program in that conference.

Like in my business... if you're in a middle-sized media market and a Top 20 calls, that's great. Just don't go to the last-place station. Ever. That will only leave you exhausted and, eventually, unemployed.

What is it with sports writers and trying to moralize everything?

many would argue that shooting 38 percent isn't performing at a high level.

With how much he has to shoot to carry that team, 38 percent is pretty good.

If you take away the stupid, bad shots he shouldnt be taking he's probably closer to 45 percent.

Turns out you were right about FGCU's enrollment. I think I misheard or misread a goal for enrollment in the next 10 or 20 years and ran with it as their numbers for 2013. Wikipedia says 12,600-ish.

The Puerto Rico Tip-Off field (the San Juan Shootout is apparently now a women's tournament) is not only set, but incredibly, ESPN has a video preview of it up here. Georgetown, Kansas State, Michigan and VCU are in it, along with Auburn, Charlotte, Long Beach State and Florida State. They'll probably parlay their March success into some sort of exempt tournament.

And if not this year, then at least in 2016 they know they'll be in the Battle 4 Atlantis by virtue of winning the coveted Atlantis on the Mainland kiddie-table tournament this season.
