Nearly every March when I see Arizona State in the NIT, I make the same statement.

All the decent players in the region go to Tucson where they draw fans.

ASU could get the arena half filled only if the cheerleaders decided to go topless every night.

ASU football should be much better, though. Much better.

  3. I was half-joking when I posted that since ASU was heralded as a plum job by ESPN when Frieder resigned in the 90s. The luster wore off by the time Rob Evans' tenure was up.

I've long wondered why location isn't a bigger factor in landing recruits. We know that for a lot of the top guys, the value of a good education or whatever isn't what they're after.

We also know that a lot of them will only be there one year before going pro, so how much interest could there possibly be in winning a title?

Yet we see places like Chapel Hill, Lexington, Durham, Bloomington and Lawrence get recruits places like Miami, UCLA, USC, Florida-Gulf Coast, Arizona State (for the party atmosphere) and Arizona can't.

    Strange.

You think it's strange that North Carolina, Kentucky, Duke, Indiana and Kansas can get basketball recruits that Miami, UCLA, USC, Florida Gulf Coast, Arizona and Arizona State can't get?

    OK

In tradition, those schools own. But if you're a college kid NOW who is just looking to spend a year in school before getting a pay day, why not go someplace like the latter group of schools where it's always warm and paradise?

Who in their right mind would choose somewhere like FGCU over the likes of Kentucky, Carolina or Kansas? Jesus.

For many reasons. One, I'm talking about a No. 1-level recruit who doesn't give a shit about school or, really, winning at the college level.

If I go to FGCU, I'm right on the beach, classes are easy, I can dunk all the time and the girls on campus and around are going to be top-level.

On a completely-unrelated topic, here's my favorite definition of obtuse ...

Slow to learn or understand; lacking intellectual acuity; "so dense he never understands anything I say to him"; "never met anyone quite so dim"; "although dull at classical learning, at mathematics he was uncommonly quick"- Thackeray; "dumb officials make some really dumb decisions"; "he was either normally stupid or being deliberately obtuse"; "worked with the slow students"
