Yet somehow, despite having such a benevolent overlord, this family member still went through a horrible ordeal that could have been avoided.

Why not? This isn't a historical document. It's not a newspaper. What's said here is not part of any official record.

There's no reason it can't be pliable.

It's not like we're preserving the minutes of the Continental Congress here.

Agreed. I wanted to delete all my posts, but there's not a "Delete All Posts" button, and there were too many to do by one-by-one. So I did the next best thing. I just changed my username here. Good enough.

I see nothing wrong with someone wanting to delete posts. I can't imagine why anyone would give a shit.

So y'all are comfortable with someone else coming in and changing your posts without your say-so? I sure as fuck wouldn't be. And yes, message boards are a written history of individuals at a moment in time. There are things that fall below the level of the Continental Congress that still shouldn't be messed with; an individual's first-person posts that have not violated board rules over the course of years falls under that.

    Changing? No.

    Deleting? Yes.

Deleting is changing gone nuclear. Why should an outside person be able to dictate what of a member's legacy stays or goes?

Well, the owner of the site certainly has that right, seeing as how he owns the content.

Well, quant, true, but we're talking an ideal message-board owner that sets rules and never removes or changes anything that doesn't violate said rules.

If you knew ALL the details and saw ALL the emails between myself and the family member, I am quite sure you would all support this decision.
(Actually, strike that. SJ folk never agree on anything as a matter of principle.)

I have multiple emails from the family member THANKING ME for how I and the rest of the staff handled the situation.

Anyone who has not seen those emails is jumping to conclusions about how the situation was handled. I did not force the family member to do anything, I offered several ways of handling it, and the family member chose how they wanted it handled. I also didn't make this decision in a vacuum--I ran it by the mods to be sure I wasn't misstepping within this community.

I originally locked this thread, but actually I think better to leave it up so you can continue discussing if you wish.

I do ask, that as a matter of decency on behalf of the family of a departed member here, can you please stop rehashing stuff related to him? Also, as @Machine Head suggested, I will be expunging references to his username from this thread.

Feel free to keep rehashing my Boom decision, or anything else you disagree with. Just please let the departed and his family rest in peace.

    I'll add my two cents.

I'm not one to post a "I'm Leaving This Board" thread. I just sort of quietly went away, while still lurking on the "Random Images" thread.

It seems I can't post an opinion without a full onslaught berating anything I have to say. And God forbid I should have a conservative viewpoint.

I even briefly came back and started a thread about the NBA MVP, and once again, was basically bullied into saying, "Fuck it" and not going back.

Just because you've been on this site for years, or have millions of posts, it doesn't give you the right to bully or disrespect, and it doesn't give you the right to jump all over someone you don't agree with.

I know several people who have tired of this site and moved on to something else. Perhaps we just grew out of it.

Yeah. I think that's a rule of thumb you'd do well to follow.
