Before a repeal, some of the states with less gun control probably should have stricter laws.

Sorry, I must have misunderstood the back-and-forth about what cops would want.

It would free up states (and possibly Congress) to regulate guns and related issues as they saw fit. California’s challenges are different than Wyoming’s, and they shouldn’t both be bound by a broad Second Amendment.

The NRA and it’s adherents have wrought this by successfully convincing Americans to internalize a version of the Second Amendment that confers nearly limitless rights of ownership. We should dispense with the Second Amendment so that we can hold national and local conversations on strictly policy grounds.

A number of states remained dry following the repeal of the 18th amendment.

People point to Chicago as a kind of failed state in the 51 states-51 sets of laws debate because the Indiana border is so close. But I don’t know how much police were really enforcing the restrictions against your law-abiding good guy with a gun so much as it was a further mechanism by which to go after gang members or add on charges.

My in-laws live in a town where it's illegal to have alcohol in your house.

It's also a town with a lot of "individual liberty!!!!" folks.

    Go figure.

States are already free to regulate guns. You said people should have to register guns and acquire a license, similar to a driver's license and registering a car. In NJ, you have to do that and pretty much only someone who is law enforcement can get a permit to carry.
