Physical pain and potentially permanent hearing damage begins to occur at 140dB. Eardrums will begin to rupture at approximately 150dB. If you fire an AR-15 without a suppressor and without any hearing protection, the overpressure generated by the gunshot will blow out your eardrums, as well as of those of anyone else in the near vicinity. If you were forced to defend your home from armed invaders and had to shoot one of them in a small hallway or bedroom, you and your family would suffer permanent hearing damage from the sound of the gunshot alone.

Is this true or an irresponsible exaggeration? Seems as if there would be a lot of deaf soldiers and terrorists if true.

That's true, but unfortunately, since Sept. 11, terror has become more common, deadly and — the real unfortunate part — accepted as part of our lives.

I wouldn't be jumping on people who wish to express their sorrow/horror over this incident and others like it, and I don't see the need to silence oneself just because you don't have the answer to all the world's problems. Some of us are really overthinking this.

 

Hell, we just had an incident near Spokane which could have had dozens of casualties if the kid's rifle didn't jam. These are dark days and very sad times.

 

Aside from that, who the fuck is shooting "armed invaders" in their fucking hallway with an AR-15? Has that literally ever happened, even in gunned-up America?

 

Repeated firing can damage your hearing. But it won't blow out your eardrums. My .270 deer rifle is louder than an AR in .223, I fire it without ear protection a couple of times per fall and winter. At the range, I always wear hearing protection, but not in the woods when hunting.

(And I question the gun-sense of anybody using an AR in home defense instead of a shotgun.)

 

We definitely need to have guns like this out there in case 500 people decide to get together and invade my house at the same time.

 

Anger and frustration are legitimate emotions this morning, even for those of us hundreds of miles away.

Mostly because we know next time, we might not be.

 

I know I can't change a damn thing about what's going on. But I sure can be outraged that it's happening.
