Shooting at Las Vegas casino

The incidents are very different. While the story of murdered children is particularly disturbing, the circumstances of the event allowed the NRA to push its good guy with a gun bullshit. They told people one good person with a gun could have saved those people and some actually bought it while others used it as an excuse to feel okay about themselves as they opposed stricter gun regulations.

This is different. You can't really make the good guy with a gun argument. One good guy with a gun in that crowd wasn't going to be able to stop the shooting in Vegas. There was no concept of seeing the attack coming and protecting yourself and the ones you love. There was only the hope that he'd miss or you might run away fast enough to survive.

The video is also different. Crying parents are one thing. Video of people running and falling with the sound of gunfire is quite different.

You are probably right, but that is about political ideology and fear of the NRA as much as anything.

 

I'm more shocked that people are shocked by the number of crimes committed by criminals. That article was a bit rich. Criminals are gonna criminal.

 

How long after Sandy Hook did LaPierre hold his press conference in which he said that he wanted to arm teachers and retirees? We all made fun of him here in real time, but it completely changed the narrative in their favor. I feel like they are struggling this time to come up with a response with traction. That was evidenced by the resort in the press release to the "good guy with a gun" talking point, which is completely out of play here.

EDIT: Sandy Hook was 12/14/2012. LaPierre's press conference was exactly one week later, on 12/21/2012.
