    School shooting? Random shooting?

I don't quite get the phrase "Shooting incident" since there were quite a few shots fired and casulites as a result during the Civil War.

JD, can you clear something up for me?

You mention this affecting fellow posters. But how? It's friggin' 2:40 p.m. now. Everyone has a cell phone and e-mail. Surely everyone should know whether their family is okay. If someone around here is still worried, then I'm not sure I can handle whatever news there might be.

"Virginia Tech president Charles Steger said police first received a call about 7:15 a.m. about a shooting at West Ambler Johnston, where police found multiple shooting victims. He said that about two hours later, university police received reports of shooting in Norris Hall. "The shooter in Norris Hall is deceased," Steger said." - Washington Post

Lord. Why didn't they close it down?

    Sorry. Reflexive journalist's reaction.

There is a thread, I just noticed, on coverage of the event on the journalism board. So it's not that out of line to examine it.

I just find it hard to believe that a site that covers VaTech exclusively doesn't have one word on its front page about this.

If someone here is savvy at getting info, please PM me. I'm trying to find local kids who might be students there and am having trouble. Thanks.

Cell phone towers can only handle so much traffic. I can imagine that everyone there with a cell phone is on it if they can.

When the DC snipers were on their run the cell phones would not work because the lines became overloaded. You just get busy signals. It happened with Sept. 11th, Katrina, etc...

It's one of the reasons why you should have a land line still.

I'd hope that the media would avoid making the comments about the Asian shooter. From my perspective, the most irrelevant fact is that the shooter is Asian because there is no evidence that the shooter's heritage had anything to do with this senseless act. It's not like it was an Asian who was shooting non-Asians -- it just sounds like the shooter, who happened to be Asian, was troubled and went on a rampage.

It is kind of like the whole Imus thing last week. When I heard the comment, I didn't think black-white, I just thought that it was a nasty thing to say about people.

I do not think the university has released anything yet.

But if they did not live in that dorm or were not an engineering major, I think they were is less danger.

Pete somebody on MSNBC reported that one of the guns was actually a "22." I don't know what that means.

The NRA isn't the problem and will not be discussed at this time. If the gunman had a NRA card, then we'll talk. LaPierre and the NRA isn't celebrating over this. AQB has a good point, it wouldn't have mattered anyway if rules would have stopped this kid.

It's the choices people make that has a direct and indirect impact on when they do something like this. Fox initially reported that 31-32 were gunned down, and it was picked up by the other outlets.

I'll ask about the three hour delay. The first shooting took place around 7am EDT, if I'm not mistaken. He had to get across campus to Norris Hall for the second shooting. If he took his time to get across campus without anyone knowing what he did at the dorm hall, would that be a possible reason for the delay?
