Someone brought up the subject earlier, and I didn't know the answer. A quick Internet search gave me this, and if more recent stats are available, I'm sure they can found with a little more time.

    2004 -- 29,589 gun-related deaths in the U.S.
    2005 -- 43,200 traffic-related deaths in the U.S.

I wouldn't have guessed the numbers were that high, and I'm not sure what those very sad numbers say.

Devil, I'm not sure why you and others keep asking me to answer questions. But I'll pretend that I have a clue. Here's my uneducated guess:

Guy's girlfriend cheats on him. Guy flips out and storms into a dorm room. He shoots the people in the dorm room. Then he flees. The police show up and decide that the shooter is one of the deceased. Isolated incident. No reason to create any more of a scene than there already is.

But it turns out that they didn't get the shooter. And the shooter, for some reason, decides he has to flee to a classroom. Perhaps he's looking for his girlfriend or someone who had a connection to her.

I will let them reveal the details when and if they are comfortable doing so. Let me just say you can know your child was near the shootings but is alive -- but you hear the fear in his or her voice -- and you can still be worried about them and wondering if they are truly OK.

    That's friggin' how.

The only way I think it is interesting is that someone must have told someone after the first round of shootings that it was an Asian student. That does narrow the search for a shooter. Should have made it easier for them to find him.

That is the only thing I find interesting about it.

That just means it was a .22 caliber weapon, which is a small caliber.

I'll buy into your theory. Again, that's why the school should've been shut down until they were certain. Something went wrong in their communications process.

Wasn't asking you, just typing out loud so to speak. But I think you are correct with the scenario.

My "why" question is how did they let the campus function without knowing 100 percent that the shooter was accounted for. I still cannot explain this to myself.

Great point. And by "Asian," don't they mean "American"? Because Americans are all different ethnicities.

A .22 is a small rifle that shoots a small bullet. I'd be surprised if it was a .22. They have a hard time killing anything much bigger than a rabbit.

It's possible though. I live in a rural area, boring ass state and everything and a kid was killed in my front yard by a .22 one night.

This will out me to the 2-3 people here who don't already know but what the hell:

Both my kids are there. One works there, one goes there.
Both are OK. Yet they are not, so I am not.
My son works one building over.
My daughter had late classes and never left her house.

Neither one of them is sure about their friends yet. They are sick, they are terrified. As am I. I know these kids. I know their parents. My kids are not injured but I feel no relief.

This is truly awful. So please heed JD's advice, not just for me but for the people and families involved.

I hope there won't be a rush to judgment on the Asian community, if it was indeed an Asian American who did this horror.
