I work in the public relations office of a small college in the South, and we discussed this very scenario while reviewing our crisis communication plan. In my mind, this is the ultimate nightmare scenario for any college or university. As others have noted, the challenges inherit in trying to secure a college campus are monumental. I'm sure the administrators, police, etc., will second-guess themselves forever regarding decisions that were or were not made this morning. I don't know that they need a bunch of people on an anonymous message board piling on while they're still counting the dead.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Va. Tech. :'(

That's really scary. But I think maybe you've perceived something in my tone that isn't there.

A .22 is normally used for plinking soda cans or small game. But it can easily kill a person from close range.

"...The overall firearm-related death rate among U.S. children aged less than 15 years was nearly 12 times higher than among children in the other 25 countries combined..."

    From here: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00046149.htm
(I’m sure there are many more sources that show similar things. I just took the first one)

The fact that many Americans can't see the correlation between the insane level of gun-related deaths and the insanely liberal gun laws in the country is baffling to those of us in the rest of the world.

    But it's your country...

Moddy, tell them to pack their shit and get the hell out of there, if they haven't already.

And take your cell phone and go for a walk.

Hack, as a fellow administrator, I know exactly what you're speaking of. Frankly, in a higher ed. environment.....we'd have a huge group of students heading out, just because we told them NOT to.

We all (staff) know the disaster response drill on our campus. But I don't think there's one of us that believes it would stop something like this. Sad.....but true.
