I've been out of range of a computer/TV all day on vacation.

    Holy shit.

It's a scary, scary thing. I just had a discussion with my boss about what we would be doing right now if it was our campus. Among other things, we maintain a hotline that, when activated, runs straight into our office. I can't imagine taking calls from frantic parents looking to us for assurance that their children are not among the victims. I just can't imagine it.

my oldest is a h.s. junior just now looking at schools. i'm thinking home schooling may be the only way to go. letting the three young shockeys leave the house is terrifying.

let me echo: thoughts and prayers to you and yours.

First off, Moddy my thoughts are with you and your family and I am happy that although they both may need to talk to somebody to get over this, that you aren't one of the 32 sets of parents who are getting a much different call today.

Since I am in college PR, I always like to use extreme events like this to examine how a school should react in a crisis. Fore example, the Blufton College bus crash a couple of weeks ago is a prime example of being ready for the worst. Hopefully, I'll never have to make use of my experience.

I can't imagine the horrific problems of trying to collect the information in this case and try to share it with the media. News reports and rumors are moving so much faster than the proper channels can that there is probably more misinformation out there than correct information (if not misinformation, it is distorted information with each statement containing at least some part of the truth).

I've been to Tech several times for athletic events and always enjoyed my time. Very safe, rural place, very friendly people.
I'm stunned by all of this today - 32 dead and counting. Like D-3, I'm an Iowa native.... I remember the grad student who went on a rampage at the University of Iowa (in 1991 - I was 13 at the time) killing six, including himself, and leaving another innocent woman a quadriplegic.
I'm an Iowa grad, and the whole state was shaken by that tragedy, but today's events make it look almost trivial in comparison.
I can't imagine what the VT community and the state of Virginia is going through.
Prayers to Moddy and all the other SportsJournalists.commers affected by this.

Likewise, BigRed, the Red Lake shootings two years ago. Not only do I know people who lived by the school/worked at the school, Mr. Rosie was working on the Rez that day (and I was so relieved when I finally heard from him that day.)

And sadly, that now seems like nothing compared to this.

I think a lot of parents will be hugging their children pretty tight tonight.

From Yawn: "Just heard that a particular video game was used as a training device for this, as was the case in Columbine and Paducah. Can we now declare that video games are as much of a problem as guns? That they invite kids to use the real thing?"

The expert on school shootings (and isn't that a sick commentary) said on FOX news that investigators will look at the dead shooter's computer for clues. He added that at Columbine and Paducah and other school shootings such as this the shooter(s) prepped on video games.

There is no connection to the Va Tech tragedy perp and violent video games, as of yet.

    Get your facts straight, Yawn.

Moddy, my thoughts are with you, your kids and their friends and families.

I was a student at McGill when Marc Lepine executed 14 female Engineering students so I know the fear, horror and confusion.

I didn't hear about this until I got home from work half an hour ago. I feel sick.

To this end, someone in my office had a link to the suspected shooter's Myspace page. Among his heroes listed was Ted Bundy. Very chilling.
