I just now finally got in touch with a friend of mine who goes to Va. Tech. He said he was at his apartment (which is thankfully away from campus) when everything broke out. He woke up and read the e-mail saying all classes were canceled today. I just thank God he's OK.

The cell phone video shot by a student in a building just across a walk way from the engineering building is chilling. You can hear gun shots, too many gun shots. Each time you hear a shot from the building, you wonder if that was someone dying.

I'm going to attempt to not get too political with this post, though I know that it's like fuel on a fire ... but just something running through my head.

Imagine being in Iraq, where every day something like this happens. Every f-ing day. Whether it's a suicide bomber, mad gunman, whatever it is. Every day.

And remember when the First Lady said, "The news stations are only focusing on the one bombing every day and not all the good things."

And this just brings into sharp focus how ludicrous that kind of thinking is. That'd be like saying, "Well no one's writing about UCLA or Notre Dame or Texas A&M today, where classes are going on as normal! They're just focusing on the one shooting at Virginia Tech!"

I only bring this up because I think it's easy to dismiss things that happen in other parts of the worlds, particularly where the citizens aren't white, as abstract.

Just imagine this ... every single day.

I don't know if it was posted yet, but I heard on WTOP that text messaging is the best way to reach people via the cell phone when the towers are jammed.

That is true. We learned that during Katrina and Rita.

Great point, Knute. Unfortunately, we've become more of a knee-jerk, short-attention-span nation. In six months, we'll have moved on and forgotten about this tragedy. The only ones who'll remember are the ones who lost loved ones or were involved.
How many people think about the current situation in New Orleans, post-Katrina? Without helicopter rescues to provide "dramatic video" our 24-hour news cycle blindly moves on to the next hot story. It's about time for an update on Anna Nicole.

Moddy - didn't realize your kids were there. Thoughts, prayers and MANY hugs go out to you and everyone. What a sad, scary time.

    Second guessing ... BEGIN.

The first shooting, a death and a tragedy ... so why didn't Va Tech shut down the campus? The question is being asked and will be asked and it's just a bunch of second guessing. Officials are supposed to immediately go into panic mode, shut down a campus with 26,000 students, perhaps causing a panic situation?

This is no doubt a horrific, unspeakable tragedy. Why and when did we start having to blame somebody or someone for EVERYTHING that happens?

This second-hand from one of the other VT threads but CNN is now reporting that the school was still locked down when the second shooting happened.

The 4:30 press conference will hopefully answer a lot of questions.
