Did the sheriff just imply that it was two different shooters? I thought he said one of those killed in the dorm was a shooter. Which would mean, obviously, a different person tore up the engineering hall.

I was in high school when 9/11 happened, and a lot of us (myself included) didn't know anything had happened. The teachers/admins did a damn good job of not saying anything about because they were afraid it would start a panic.

But anyway, I really hope the shooter gets what's coming to him.

Imagine trying to lock down a city of nearly 30,000 people in a matter of a couple of hours. Can't be done. It just can't. I don't care how good your crisis plan is.

Even if you can notify every single student you're still going to have people who disregard the warning or some failure in actually locking down a building. And if the shooter's already in the building, people are still going to die.

Shooter in engineering building took his own life.

Armchair, agree on that. I can't even imagine police trying to lock down KU so quickly under the same circumstances. You might imagine this scenario in a drill, but it's different when it happens.

And that's not even taking into account how laughibly easy it is to get into a "secure" dorm or class building on a college campus.

First off Moddy and all of those who know someone affected, my thought and prayers are with you.
Talked to a friend of mine whose daufghter goes there. She said she was safe, but terrified and shaken.
None of us can know that fear unless we live it ourselves.

I love the cynism and politics on this board. Blame the NRA. Blame the school. We need gun control. Yada Yada Yada.
No one ever points out, how much money the NRA actually spend on gun safety programs, how little crime is actually committed by NRA members. No one recalls the assault weapon bad Clinton signed in his first term. (which Columbine happened 5 years later, now this) (and yes I know the definition of assault weapon leaves a lot open to debate..not my point). No one cares to notice the fact that less than 10 percent of all violent crimes in the U.S. are committed with firearms.
Instead, we blame. We quickly say changes need to be made. Procedures need to be in place. Yet we don't know what was in place.

Let's hear it Boots, what is the procedure at your office? Do you know it? Is there one? Does anyone know the procedure at their office? I mean, it's been pointed out on this board that this can happen anywhere anytime.
I'll ignore the obvious question about how a "lockdown procedure" would have helped anymore in 911.
Sure mistakes were made there, likely to be made at V-Tech, too. Is the answer really to jump into panic/shutdown mode anytime the slightest situation occurs? Next airplane that flies into restricted airspace over the White House....pentagon...Crawford ranch....do we go into lockdown then? Shut down all air traffic?

And for the record, no I'm not an NRA member, never will be. Have never owned or shot a firearm in my life...probably never will. And I do think guns should have restricted access, but people who want guns will find them. People doing crimes, stats show, aren't exactly registered gun owners. We're journalists, sure we ask questions, but why are we so quick to blame, and not wait for facts?

I'm pretty sure the poster blaming the NRA was being sarcastic and was ridiculing those who would hold the NRA partially responsible.

The gun control debate is on the Anything Goes board now.

Oz, I'm with you. I was on campus at KU when 9/11 happened and happened to see it on the news before heading to an 8:30 class. When my roomate and I got to class about half the people there hadn't heard anything about it yet. Many of the people that did didn't really understand what was going on. There's just no way to get everyone informed and mobilized in time.

Joe, at my office, we have drills. I have also sat in on a few meetings regarding safety. As for notification, I just don't buy the argument that that couldn't shut the campus down. In the wake of 911 and Columbine and the school has had numerous bomb threats, something should have kicked to authorities to implement a policy.

I'm glad both of my friends who are engineering majors at Va Tech weren't there when this went down.
