7:15 a.m. the shooting began. Two hours later, another report.
Ask any police officer. The first thing you do is secure a scene. That means stopping traffic going in and out. That wasn't done apparently.

One of the reasons why is that Katie Couric is down there and she asked the first question off the bat on why wasn't their a lockdown. Kaite freakin' Couric. While Charlie and Brian are still in NYC at their desks, Katie does the Dan Rather routine: jump on the first plane available and take over the coverage for CBS.

It is apparent and quite easy to understand why there wasn't a lockdown right away. The first shootings at Amber Johnston was considered to be an isolated seperate incident. Two hours later, the Norris shootings took place. With 26k students on that campus, the administrators are contacting faculty, RA's, other personnel, and RHD's, along with calling and emailing students as much and soon as they could. Give the VaTech authorities a chance to gather up the information.

And, we are not going to say this over and over again: if you want to talk about gun control or anything related to that, there is a thread for that under Anything Goes. We're keeping this solely on the events in Blacksburg.

I had to rewind my DVR to see if I heard one question right.

"Was there any resistance? It seems to me if someone had a gun in a room I was in, I might try to tackle him or something?"

Uh, BULLSHIT! The one and only time I had a gun pointed at me, I didn't do shit, and that was some crackhead robbing my video store way back when.

There's nothing more annoying -- and in this case downright offensive to the families who lost loved ones -- than the Monday morning hero/dick-swinging cowboy who picks these things apart after the fact. Fuck you asshole.

I should add that asking a question about resistance is fine, but stop there. The aside was one of the most asinine things I've ever heard and though it sounded like a student reporter to me, almost no one in America is going to make that distinction.

As a college student this makes me so freaking sick to my stomach. Its absolutely terrible, and a tragedy. The contrast of the evil happening in a place of learning makes it even harder to take.

That one left me slack-jawed and flabbergasted too.

    Read D_3's response.

And SBN, I'm right there with you. Even though I'm not in school right now, this scares the living hell out of me.

That reporter should at least be reprimanded by his boss. I mean that. There are so many illegitimate reasons people hate the media. We shouldn't add to it.

How can they not confirm that the same guy did both shootings, though. When they call the first incident domestic, do we know if it was an ex-girlfriend something?

What a seriously fucked up world.

I can't even fathom one person killing so many people. Unbelievable. Execution style? Thirty-odd people? Unfathomable. Makes me wonder if there's more than one or two people involved.

And I'm with Boots on this one: Someone high up at VA Tech fucked up hard core. I know it's 30,000 people but there is no way, none, that campus should be open after one shooting. None.

Prayers with all those affected, as well as those on SJ who have spent so much time at a school that will never be the same.

Keep in mind there are probably at least 10 TV slaps down there grandstanding and thinking to themselves "this is my ticket to a promotion."

I think that's a completely legit question, albeit asked rather poorly. Especially with so few details immediately available.

High school shooting out this way several years ago, several students charged and tackled the shooter and stopped him before he killed some more. So it can happen.
