As a former reporter who is now on the other side of the fence (college pr), I've been pretty disgusted by the coverage the last couple of days. The rush to judgement has been ridiculously swift and, in my view, sickening. That said, I have to say ABC did a great job with their Primetime Live special tonight. It was moving and informative, which is more than I can say for much of what has passed for "reporting" since this news first broke.

Fens I can't quite tell which side you're on here?
You saying some of the college-aged men in the classrooms should have bum-rushed the guy, or not?

Lot of kids in Northern Virginia suburbs of DC go to Virginia Tech if they can't get into UVA or Ivy League, or are still too smart for Maryland or West Virginia.

Classy move on the part of the Nationals to don the Hokie caps tonight. Small gesture, but touching just the same.

Guess you missed the segment on CNN tonight where they interviewed the gun shop owner. The shooter had three forms of legit ID (as required by law), passed the background check (as required by law), didn't have a prior criminal record (see background check) and paid with a credit card. Everything was on the up and up about the purchase.

Didn't stop the guy from killing 32 people.

This is what really scares me, Fenian -- what is the chilling next step in this wingnut's possible, faulted logic?

That the passengers on United 93 are ultimately to blame? After all, would this guy argue that by rushing their eventual murderers don't they set an impossibly high standard for future hostages to live up to? That future victims are less worthy of sympathy if they don't one-up it -- bum-rush the guy and bring him to justice themselves?

This guy Nathaniel Blake is treading down a nauseatingly scary path.

EDIT: Just to clarify, this is NOT what I personally believe. I think both the United 93 and VT victims deserve all praise, sympathy and support. I'm only trying to figure out where that wingnut was going with his logical argument.

Got a maroon button-down work shirt. Need to get an orange t-shirt to wear under it now.

10 or 15 years ago. But Maryland is right up there with Tech, and both are up there with UVA in their best fields. Neither are close at all to being considered a safety school.

Anyone see the Collegiate Times' cover? Someone e-mailed me the file. I'd post the link here, but the link off the Times' Web site is coming up with a 404 error.
Terrific job done by those putting out this paper, people who were affected directly by Mr. Cho's actions.

Also, Va. Tech has started a fund to assist those affected by the shootings.
