From what I heard on CNN, early reports are that he was asking people where his girlfriend was and when they couldn't tell him, they were shot. Certainly this guy had bigger issues than the girl, but that's apparently what was driving him.

And the idea that cancelling classes on two hours notice would have stopped or even limited the killing is insane. There's no system that would allow all students to know that classes are cancelled in that short amount of time. Not saying that classes shouldn't have been cancelled, but that wouldn't have done much. Normally you would find out on short notice by a posting on the classroom door. In this instance, there should have been law enforcement outside yelling "get the fuck back in your room and lock the door!"

Boots, if you don't think he shouldn't be banned, you don't get it either.

Which is why the school could be held at fault. It should've been locked down, no quesitons asked in my opinion.

Cake in the Rain, interesting take. I definitely see your point. I'm not anti-gun at all, just anti-semi automatic weapons.

We jail for weed? Think that's silly?

We have also hate penalties for "groups" yet it doesn't erase the so-called bigotry and a killing is a killing. They don't live longer just because they weren't killed for WHO they were.

We need life sentences/death penalties for gun crimes.

RIP to the victims and my condolences to families.

But again, this is a big college campus on a Monday morning. It's not an elementary school where 20 teachers put all the kids under their desks. This is beyond sad but we all know that when deranged people put their minds to something, there's just not a whole lot of evasive action you can take in those few available moments. Our logical thoughts of lockdowns, etc., just don't apply.

Mark, he said something fucked up. That was his opinion. Let it go at that.

I think you're right in that it might not have done a lot, but it's definitely something that should have been done anyway.

That aside, I can't imagine how that campus must feel right now. My heart aches for them.

I think people are a little too quick to place blame on the university. At least wait for the facts. Heavens.

Another waste of government: the sure-to-come presidential comment and press release that "strongly condemns this attack." Like, would anyone expect him not to? What does that add or how does that help? Visit the campus for the memorial, dammit.

I am in no way pro-gun. Yes, I'm a Republican, but I've never owned a firearm and don't plan on owning one. I think the laws should be stricter on firearms and that it should be more difficult to get one than it already is. I think if you have any kind of record, you shouldn't be able to purchase a firearm.

But ... but ... but ... guns don't kill people. People do.

My thoughts and prayers are with everybody up in Blacksburg. I went there once to cover a game and my jeep got caught in the snow. Four students, walking by who saw me struggling, immediately rushed over and pushed my jeep out of its spot. That's my only memory of Virginia Tech. Again, thoughts and prayers.
