Yeah, I'm sure when the KKK holds meetings, none of them think it's okay to use that word. And for years, it was okay for Imus' sidekicks to use it as far as they were concerned since no one called them on it. Finally, this time they got nailed for it.

This is the very excuse that Imus and his supporters made when they cited gangsta rap music's use of the term. "If it's okay for them . . . etc."

Think you forgot the blue font.

I said out-of-touch characters in my post, which meant people who lack common sense. Klansmen would be included among them, racists, sexists, etc. When I made that post, I had your average citizen in mind ... your friends, people in the workplace, people walking down the streets, etc.

    Ah, I see.

The way it was written, it looked like you meant "out of touch characters" like Borat. Meaning, fictional characters who say it for shock value. I suppose you could categorize the KKK this way.

As for "racists" and "sexists", I would suspect if you meet enough people, you would encounter a few who usually fall under neither category, yet who use the word, possibly with the same excuse Imus tried to use. There are unfortunately many people who are upstanding members of the community in other ways, yet think speech like this and calling women "hos" is okay.

I agree that taking ownership of a word can be empowering to a group.

However, and perhaps it's because of my hypersensitivity, when I call someone a bitch, it's not a term of endearment. When I am called a bitch, by anyone, my initial reaction is not "oh, they're goofing around". If it's a friend who calls me that, I can hold back my initial anger and see their intentions were not negative or demeaning.

I will, however, refer to myself as a bitch (when my behavior warrants it or when I feel the need to do a little ass kicking), and I do read Bitch magazine. I also use the word as a verb to describe the process of complaining.

Man, I need to update my magazine literacy. I never even heard of this.
