I maybe really should change the thread title, as "Overseas" is far more accurate.

    Campaign 2012

    Romney: keeps unknown assets offshore.

Obama: keeps bin Laden's corpse offshore.

    Advantage: Obama

Any other way would be dishonorable.

Oh sure. The white Democrats were "fundamentally sound" while Obama is just a "gifted campaigner." Typical sportswriter prejudice. ;-)

What cracks me up is the right-wing and Village reaction to Obama actually campaigning for office.

"Doesn't he know he's just supposed to humbly present himself for our judgement? How dare he attempt to persuade, or, GASP, make an emotional appeal? Who does he think he is?"

It's just not how things are done, dear boy. And speaking about money, besides.

There is NO tax advantage to keeping or investing your money at UBS -- unless you consider trying to use Swiss banking secrecy laws to commit tax evasion (which is illegal--and pretty difficult for an American to do nowadays, anyhow) a tax advantage. I consider it criminality, not a flaw in our tax code, though. The same way I wouldn't consider it a flaw in our tax code that some people don't bother to file a return and pay taxes. Those people are breaking the law.

The fact that these were accounts that we all know about because they showed up on Mitt Romney's tax returns makes it obvious that he was not committing tax evasion. He declared them for the IRS to see.

My question still stands. I responded to a post suggesting there is some kind of tax advantage to be garnered from having an account at UBS. What is that advantage? Innuendo about tax evasion -- particularly since these are accounts we know about from his tax returns -- ain't gonna cut it, because that isn't a tax advantage, it is someone breaking the law.

Your question was about "anyone" keeping money at UBS. There are obvious tax advantages to doing so, and there are a lot of people who have money over there for that exact reason while the U.S. and Swiss governments hash out the details and Rand Paul tries to pour water over the proceedings. Probably not in Romney's case as you say. However, the initial comment from the Obama camp was referring to his Swiss and Cayman bank accounts, and the tax advantages of accounts in the Caymans are well-known.

I'd like to know more about these accounts.

Are they plain Jane bank accounts, or are they investments in off shore funds?

Yeah? Lay some details on me and the rest of the board. I'm all ears ...
