Giving out the paper's phone number to someone looking for advertising help isn't any different that the conversations BTE described.

You call it a Carl Lewis leap, I call it walking an old lady's bags across the street.

Company should have that as a free option for employees.

And, employees should take that option.

That said, yes, you should know what is in your paper and the competition.

Maybe, but to play devils advocate, does the administrative assistant for a VP at H&R Block get her taxes done for free? Does the fry guy at Burger King get free food?

They get discounts, and they're encouraged to visit their restaurant. But what do you tell the on-a-diet employee who works at Burger King? If you don't eat here, you don't have pride in your product?

If you work at a funeral home, are you supposed to die?

If you work at a funeral home, should you let them bury you?

  8. This is, to paraphrase Jones from another thread, some good shit ...

If you work at ESPN, do they force you to watch ESPN at home?

    What about ESPNews?

For all of the people who say you're a disgrace if you don't subscribe, do you actually remember what it was like to make less than $25K a year? I do ... My last gig, at least early on, after rent, credit cards, student loans, car insurance, gym, utilities, groceries, etc., I had maybe $100 a month to spare. Maybe. No fucking way I'm turning around and giving that back to my company. Sorry. I can read the thing at work.

All I'm saying is $10 a month can be make or break for some people.

    That is an excellent point.

Yet some of those people would likely say, "you shouldn't have used credit cards" or "cut out the gym" or "cut out other luxuries", etc. ::)

    Regardless, you're absolutely right.
