Don't know if she's been mentioned but back in the '70s Roberta Flack was recording simple beautiful songs...

    --Killing Me Softly
    -- Feel Like Making Love
-- First Time I Ever Saw Yor Face
    -- You've Got a Friend
    -- Where Is The Love

Diana Ross recorded Touch Me In the Morning around the same period.

Badfinger had three beautiful tracks on Side 1 of its seminal No Dice album, too:

    -- No Matter What
    -- Without You
    -- Love Me Do

Also, moving into the '80s, another favorite, Ricki Lee Jones, recorded We Belong Together, which was about her breakup with Tom Waits.

I have no idea what the standard for this thread is. I find every song I love beautiful in its own way. OK, I might not use the word to describe "Creeping Death," but it still has a level of beauty.

I'd guess some of these favorites might make more sense in the thread:

"Purple Rain," Prince and the Revolution
    "Backstreets," Bruce Springsteen:

"Lost in the Supermarket," The Clash:

"Candle in the Wind," Elton John:

    "Don't Cry," Guns N' Roses:

    "In My Life," The Beatles:

    "Love and Happiness," Al Green:

I know it's supposed to be popular music but I honestly believe this might be the most beautiful song ever written and this is a stunning performance by Jose van Dam. While it's not literally about death it's the song I want for any funeral or memorial service held for me.

    The translation of the text:

I am lost to the world
with which I used to waste so much time,
It has heard nothing from me for so long
that it may very well believe that I am dead!

It is of no consequence to me
    Whether it thinks me dead;
    I cannot deny it,
for I really am dead to the world.

I am dead to the world’s tumult,
And I rest in a quiet realm!
I live alone in my heaven,
In my love and in my song!
