No. 176: BANDITOS -- The Refreshments (Also receiving a vote: "Mekong")

A band I honestly had never heard of until I looked them up for this countdown. They're pretty damn good.

No. 174: TIME -- Pink Floyd
No. 173: ALL APOLOGIES -- Nirvana

This is UNFORGIVABLY LOW!!!!!!!!! Greatest sax solo ever and one of the truly great, evocative songs of all-time. You are going to cost Rafferty a scholars--oh. right. Well you still suck and I'm going to crank call you during your morning drive!!! :D :D :D

Some "crows" of various genres received votes:

No. 169: MR. JONES -- Counting Crows (Also getting a vote: "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby")
No. 168: ALL I WANNA DO -- Sheryl Crow (who also got a vote for "Maybe Angels")

    And speaking of angels ...

No. 167: SHE TALKS TO ANGELS -- The Black Crowes (video:
    )

No. 166: HARD TO HANDLE -- The Black Crowes

Both are great songs off a great debut album, "Shake Your Money Maker."

No. 165: ROCK OF AGES -- Def Leppard

Complete with a typically cheesy early 1980s video:

The guys look really young in this video ... because they are!

No. 164: IN THE AIR TONIGHT -- Phil Collins (Also nominated: "We Said Hello Goodbye")

No. 163: HYSTERIA -- Def Leppard

This one's a long-distance shout-out to my man, Sam Mills:

No. 162: HERE COMES THE FLOOD -- Peter Gabriel

A vintage, 1979 video of him playing it on piano:

No. 161: IN YOUR EYES -- Peter Gabriel

No. 160: PARANOID ANDROID -- Radiohead (Also nominated: Subterranean Homesick Alien)

Performed live in 1997, the year the excellent "OK Computer" album came out. In other words, before they weirded out again ...

Two classics from one of the best singer-songwriters of the 1970s:

No. 159: LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY -- James Taylor
No. 158: FIRE AND RAIN -- James Taylor

"Sweet Baby James" will appear later in this countdown, singing background vocals on someone else's song ... (hint, hint)

Here's two from one of the most under-rated, under-appreciated artists of the 1990s:

No. 157: UGLY TRUTH -- Matthew Sweet
No. 156: GIRLFRIEND -- Matthew Sweet

Had a chance to see this guy in the early 1990s and missed it. I'm still kicking myself over it ...

Time for our Uncle Tupelo rock block:

No. 155: DROWN -- Son Volt
No. 154: IMPOSSIBLE GERMANY -- Wilco
No. 153: AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT YOU SAID -- Wilco

The link above is for No. 153, which is the lead track on Wilco's hard-rockin' "A Ghost is Born" album.

More from Jay Farrar and Son Volt later ...
