This artist really should be ranked much higher, considering how many others (up to and including Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, etc.) have imitated her.

But since she only got two votes ...

No. 110: BORDERLINE -- Madonna ("Material Girl" also got a vote)

Hate to admit it, but this is a damn catchy song, even 25-plus years later.

Another artist who's way lower than he should be, but he received only two votes:

No. 109: POSITIVELY FOURTH STREET -- Bob Dylan (also nominated: Desolation Row)

This guy was such a huge influence on so many people, he deserves his own thread.

    Oh, wait: http://www.sportsjournalists.com/forum/threads/83848/

The Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famers keep on comin':

No. 108: ROCKAWAY BEACH -- The Ramones (also nominated: Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)

This one's the second track on their third album, "Rocket to Russia." Unfortunately, Dee Dee, Johnny and Joey have all passed away. RIP.

No. 107: SYNCHRONICITY II -- The Police (also receiving votes: King of Pain and Every Breath You Take, which was mentioned earlier)

You can't go wrong with a song about the Loch Ness monster!

(OK, I know it's about more than that)

No. 106: BAD MOON RISIN' -- Creedence Clearwater Revival
No. 105: FORTUNATE SON -- Creedence Clearwater Revival

These guys were more productive than even the most staff-slimmed newsroom.

Between 1969 and 1970, CCR cranked out FIVE classic albums: Bayou Country, Green River, Willy and the Poor Boys, Cosmos Factory and Pendulum.

Of course, by the end of that insane stretch of productivity, they all hated each other, and the acrimony continues 40 years later.

Yet another similarity to many newsrooms ... :D

No. 104: MY OLD SCHOOL -- Steely Dan

These guys also had votes for "Midnight Cruiser" and "Deacon Blues."

A great band that loved to sing about criminals, drugs and California tumblin' into the sea. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker weren't exactly Captain and Tennille in terms of subject matter.

Plus, bonus points because they named their group after a dildo! :D

Three votes for one of the Super Bowl's most underrated halftime performers:

No. 103: FREE FALLIN -- Tom Petty

Also nominated were "I Need to Know" and "Runnin' Down a Dream," both great songs as well.

No. 102: FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND/LOVE LIES BLEEDING -- Elton John

The opening track off (arguably) his greatest album, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

SportsJournalists.comers also cast votes for "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (the song) and "Madman Across the Water."

Elton still puts on a helluva a show, 40-plus years after his first album came out. And, as he likes to say, he's proud to be one of the world's most famous homosexuals.

A true character, showman and great songwriter.

We're going to finish the night off with an all-time favorite:

No. 101: BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY -- Queen

    Here's the Wayne's World-inspired video:

    --------------------------------------------------------

Even though Memorial Day's officially over and this is supposed to be "the Memorial Day 300 countdown" (another blown deadline ...), I want to wrap this up right by posting the final 100 songs tomorrow (later today, Tuesday).

Thanks to everyone who voted and who has been following along on the thread.

Tune in midday tomorrow, when We Will, We Will Rock You :)

Time to finish this thing off. Like someone used to say ...

"As the numbers get smaller, the hits get bigger!"

No. 100: IN THE EVENING -- Led Zeppelin
No. 99: JUMP -- Van Halen

These two songs just go to show ... even the best guitarists ever like cheesy synths once in a while.

Re: SportsJournalists.com Memorial Day 300 rock songs COUNTIN' DOWN TO No. 1

After jumping his way out of his previous band, the lead singer prancing around in the above YouTube clip covered this song:

No. 98: CALIFORNIA GIRLS -- The Beach Boys

This clip links perhaps the Beach Boys biggest hit with pics of perhaps the most famous California girl, Marilyn Monroe.

Of course, she was gone by the time the song topped the charts in 1965.

A couple other gems from the 1960s:

No. 97: SURFER GIRL -- The Beach Boys
No. 96: THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD -- The Beatles
