First heard Kashmir in the middle of the night on my way to South Padre Island in one of these:

    No. 62: CRUSH WITH EYELINER -- R.E.M.
    No. 61: ORANGE CRUSH -- R.E.M.

The ultimate college rock band made the switch from independent label IRS to big-boy label Warner Bros. in 1988, and released the "Green" album.

This was (in our voters' opinion) the best song on it:

No. 60: CAN'T YOU HEAR ME KNOCKING -- The Rolling Stones

Another great one from "Sticky Fingers." I love the way they end the song with a four-minute jam/sax solo.

No. 59: LET IT BLEED -- The Rolling Stones

Not just a great record, but a great album cover, too:

No. 58: GOD ONLY KNOWS -- The Beach Boys

Maybe one of the saddest songs ever recorded. A helluva a long way from "Fun, Fun, Fun," that's for sure.

Whoops ... almost forgot the link:

No. 57: I'M THE OCEAN -- Neil Young (with Pearl Jam)

No. 56: CINNAMON GIRL -- Neil Young (with Crazy Horse)

Neil Young has two sides to his musical personality, and these two songs exemplify the raw, garage band rocker.

Cinnamon Girl predates grunge by a generation; then in the 1990s, Neil joined a few of his disciples, the members of Pearl Jam, for an incredible album, "Mirror Ball."

He's still going strong and as unpredictable as ever.

No. 55: TWIST AND SHOUT -- The Beatles
No. 54: YESTERDAY -- The Beatles

Two of the best vocal performances by John and Paul, respectively.

Let's face it, this whole Top 100 could be Beatles songs. They put out so many good ones, SportsJournalists.com voters picked 11 of them, and no two picks were the same.

And we're not done with the Fab Four yet.

No. 53: YOU REALLY GOT ME -- The Kinks

One of the most famous riffs of all time. Written by Dave Davies when he was all of 17 years old.

    No. 52: BABA O'REILLY -- The Who

No. 51: MY GENERATION -- The Who

The above link is their performance of My Generation at Woodstock.

This collection is going to be as good as any radio station's or magazine's.

Wish I'd thought of "Long Cool Woman," too. Very worthy of a high finish.

I agree -- Kashmir is not my favorite on that album, by a long shot. I've always been partial to "The Rover."
