Anybody know what job is more lonely, desperate and antiquated than working on the copy desk?

That's right ... the overnight DJ.

It's something I always wanted to try, though. And in a way, I did once — back at the University of Iowa's KRUI ("Radio for the students, by the students"). I thought it was cool to hang with my roommate and his weird pals as they played growlers such as Celtic Frost and Armored Saint for the handful of people who accidentally stumbled across 89.7 FM at 1 a.m.

So Ron, I raise a Kokanee in your direction (wherever you are) as we kick off ...

The Memorial Day Top 500 300 Rock Songs of All Time

(as voted on by the fine posters of SportsJournalists.com)

Checking in at No. 300, representing all the fine personality profile songs of the 1970s (Levon, Ledo, Leroy Brown, etc...) it's BRANDY by Looking Glass.

You know you want to sing along ...

OK, this one's from my high school wheelhouse.

Crank up that cigarette lighter and wave it at Sebastian Bach ....

No. 299: I REMEMBER YOU by Skid Row

No. 298: 96 TEARS by ? and the Mysterians

So, who was this ? guy anyway?

Apparently, his name is Rudy Martinez, the lead singer of a one-hit wonder garage band from Bay City, Mich. (Tri-Cities! Represent!)

    According to Wikipedia:

In other words, these guys were Star Crunch, Coco the Electronic Monkey Wizard and the rest of Man? Or Astro-Man? three decades earlier.

    Awesome.

Believe it or not, of the 369 votes we had, only one was for a Fleetwood Mac song.

And since it was me, I picked my favorite ...

No. 297: GYPSY by Fleetwood Mac

(this isn't so much a video as a collage of Stevie Nicks pictures. Paper Doll, take note)

For my money, this song has Lindsey's best guitar solo from his days in the Mac.

When this song was nominated by BYH, he called Damn Yankees "the last great band of the AOR era."

At this hour, bloated by British Columbia beer and Doritos, I'm not going argue with that. Right on!

No. 296: COMING OF AGE by Damn Yankees

Saw these guys in concert, with what was left of Bad Company, in the winter of 1991.

They did some DY songs, then Jack, Tommy and Uncle Ted all got to play some of their "hits" in the middle of the set.

I seem to recall the Nuge bragging how we would kick Saddam Hussein's ass back into the stone age. Well, it took another dozen years, but we finally did it, Uncle Ted. Go ahead and drink some more deer blood with your ol' buddy Fred Bear.

No. 295: TAKE ME OUT by Franz Ferdinand

Good stuff from 2004, when we were sure John Kerry would bury GW Bush in a debate. Or something like that.

Crank it up ... just like the Kokanee beer billboard: CRANK UP YOUR SUMMER!

No 294: SOMETHING ABOUT YOU by Level 42

Solid mid-1980s rock. The lead singer had a cool bass guitar, which you can see in the YouTube clip of their Saturday Night Live appearance in 1986.

But the audio of that sucked ... probably somebody's old VHS tape posted onto YouTube.

That's what our kids will say about MP-3s in another decade or two.

No. 293: IT KEEPS YOU RUNNIN' by the Doobie Brothers

Ooh ... now some folks might say this is the beginning of a dark era for the Doobies, as Michael McDonald began to take over the band and turn those northern California boogie rockers into a bunch of harmonizing ex-hippies who were a slave to the grind of blue-eyed soul vocals and cheesy synthesizers.

But not me! Hell, I'd rather belt out "Takin' It To the Streets" in the shower over "Black Water" any day!

This is such a great song, it made No. 293 in the countdown.

The key-tar was only a few years away, people.

Some dude put together a cool collage to go with this song. And Chris Squire is a kick-ass bass player.

    Great pick Machine Head ...

No. 291: HOW A RESURRECTION REALLY FELLS by The Hold Steady

This is a song I honestly had never heard until Cosmo nominated it. And you know, it's pretty good.

Much rather list stuff like this in our countdown than some deep cut by Cat Stevens. Rock on!
