“Hopefully they get to the bottom of how this bag got opened,” he said, “where the real evidence is, and if it is established, why anybody would have the incentive to tamper with a rape kit.”

I'm very confused. So, the lawyer of the accuser is dropping out? Because of the rape kit thing? Does that mean they're faking the rape-kit-on-the-doorstep story? I don't get it.

 

The lawyer appears to doubt the story the accuser's mother told him about how the bag ended up in her possession. He believes it is a legitimate evidence bag but does not believe the story about how it came to be in her possession. Because he does not believe the mother's story about the bag, he is dropping out (I'm sure there's a more legal term than that). He reiterated he does believe the accuser's story and that she was not a part of bringing the bag to him, though he also said he held yesterday's PC at the request of the accuser's family.

As far as what the bag is, I saw people speculating it might be an evidence bag that was used to return clothes to the accuser that weren't part of the investigation. I don't know how true that might be. The police department or DA (I forget which) is having a press conference tomorrow, likely about the evidence situation.

 

From a journalism standpoint what do you do with footage of this guy saying the name? Bleep it? Try to cut around it? Are any outlets in Buffalo or Chicago carrying this live and putting him naming out by mistake live?

 

Chicago Tribune reporting that the friend now no longer fully backs the accuser's story and doesn't want to testify.
