I think a fair way to assess SNL casts is a like a college football program. How many players go to the pros. How many cast members go on to be big stars on their own after they leave the show. The Farley-Spade-Rock-Sandler group probably has a slight edge on the original cast in those terms. Murphy and Belushi probably became the biggest individual stars.

And Wiig has broken out with "Bridesmaids," and Sudekis with some of his recent work, albeit in a supporting role. Samberg really hasn't stepped out, but I think he might down the line. Anyone I'm missing from the current crew?

None of the casts (except the ill-fated second) failed to produce at least one star. But some have produced more than others.

Yeah, Sudeikis has done very well as of late. He wasn't the biggest name in either movie, but he was on screen as much as Owen Wilson in Hall Pass and Jason Bateman in Horrible Bosses. He was very good in both as well. He'll have no trouble finding consistent work.

Wiig has real potential. She just needs to stop overacting on SNL (where I think she's highly mediocre) and keep doing films where she's already shown the talent and the range to do whatever she wants. How many really funny female actresses are there? Not many...

That list is brutally bad, but I will say this - with the exception of the Palin-Couric interview, the Top 10 looks solid because all those skits are still great. I think the Frank Sinatra Hour with Hartman not on that list is a joke and Larry the Lobster needs to be included.
It's funny, because if the list was put together by anyone over the age of 40, there'd be nothing from 2000 and on.

    The Sinatra group...

(to Sting, as Billy Idol): "I got chunks of guys like you in my stool!"

Cowbell is my favorite and nothing is even close...

Synchronized Swimming would be a distant second.

One of my favorites that never gets any mention is Hartman as Pete Rose and Carvey as Raymond in a Rain Man spoof that happened just as the Rose scandal was happening...

I finally watched all of last week's episode and I was very impressed with Melissa McCarthy. By far the best job by a host in a very long time. Not necessarily the best episode, but just in terms of everything the host added to sketches.

I don't think that's a valid point with SNL because the cast and writers constantly change.

But the guy running the show and ultimately calling the shots hasn't. For better or worse, it's Lorne Michael's baby.

    Doesn't Meyers write Weekend Update?
