SNL's Continued Downward Spiral Thread

Chris Rock is incredibly funny, but I'm not sure that he was the best fit for for SNL (though it certainly didn't hurt his career).

Certain comics don't adapt the best to sketch comedy. Pete Davidson is this cast's example. His Weekend Update guest spots are very good, and the occasional filmed piece hits (the Chad series, for one), but he's not a sketch performer. Same with the recently departed Leslie Jones. Funny people, but maybe not the best for SNL.

Chameleons thrive at SNL. Hartman, McKinnon, Carvey, Poehler. They can write, they can do impressions, they have they original ideas, and they can carry a sketch or provide a bit part.

Agreed on some other opinions shared here - Cecily Strong is criminally underused. Melissa Villasenor and Heidi Gardner are ready to take the reins. Mikey Day is superb. And I think they're going heavy on Kate McKinnon because this is likely her last year.

Watt wasn't bad, great for a pro athlete (though I do wonder who would have had the slot if the Texans were in the SB) - Gronk?

Problem was that the sketches all seemed like lesser versions of better ideas.

Not sure if I'll ever be able to lose the image of Pete Davidson with boobs.

Congratulations, Pete Davidson! Next to Bieber, you look downright normal.

Geeked for Feb. 29...John Mullaney and David Byrne. (Just wonder how the American Utopia material will work on that small, cramped music stage.)

Mullaney crushed the monologue, and David Byrne was great - outside of the LaGuardia sketch (really nothing from Rent?) - the show was mostly a miss. Though I don't exactly know where Bernie ends and Larry David begins.

A Mulaney monologue and his requisite singing sketch make these shows worth it. They had two cut for time:

That bit in the monologue about Jesus making friends as an adult ... was that from one of his old stand-up routines? Because I’ve seen that meme enough to have thought he was borrowing material.

I really enjoyed the Weekend Update last week, especially Michael Che just getting more and more "drunk" through the entire cast. I watched for Mulaney (I know he's filmed a new special so hopefully that drops on Netflix soon) but the sketches outside of the Cold Open, Monologue and LaGuardia were meh for me.

Yeah - and I'm guessing they're going to have to settle on a Biden at some point. Surprised they haven't given it to Alex Moffatt, he's got the forehead for it.
