Looks like I spoke too soon. The second half of the show was brutal. And what's up with these musical guests? I must be getting old.

Like I've said before, if I'm choosing to watch TV at midnight on a Saturday night, what's better out there? "Grey's Anatomy" reruns?

I thought the show was one of the strongest of the season, but the musical act looked like a badly-performed skit. I kept waiting for Samberg to show up at keyboard.

This is probably the best explanation for why the show remains on the air.

I'm actually a little surprised they did a "Les Jeunes de Paris" skit (which ordinarily, I don't particularly like) without Paul Brittain.

Are they going to trot out Jeunes de Paris every time they have a host who dances or thinks they can dance? Because there wasn't enough to that bit to carry one sketch, let alone one every other episode.

    Oh, it was cute.

I think they've only done it three times, maybe four - one or twice with Emma Stone, once with Miley Cyrus, and once with Zooey.

Cage and Cage was probably the highlight of the season so far. So, so great. Outside of that, I liked the Eastwood parodies, the French dancing, and the Zooey Deschanel Show thing with Abby Elliott and Zooey as Mary Kate Olson.

Hader as Eastwood was funny and the Nic Cage thing was pretty damn good...

Nothing else from the show even registered.

Samberg is pretty underrated with the celebrity impressions. Granted, being able to do a spot-on Nic Cage doesn't make him any different from 95 percent of the others who can do impressions, but his Mark Wahlberg from a few years ago was one of the funniest things I've seen on that show in ages.

And Samberg's musical spoof digital shorts are spot on. "Jizzed in My Pants" absolutely nailed the Pet Shop Boys.

For whatever reason, they really haven't ridden Samberg that hard. He's goofy and limited as a performer, but hey, that didn't stop Adam Sandler. More so than Jay Pharoah, him not getting more of a push makes me wonder what kind of politics go on backstage at SNL.

Jay Pharoah needs to show a little more game before he gets a little more push.
