Well, I guess this is warts and all but was there any reason to show the criminal Rudy G in the post-9/11 show?

Not sure what category(ies) the Emmys might have for a documentary, but it could go along way toward Questlove getting the EGO portion of the EGOT.

I recall at the time having a good feeling when I watched that show live. Everything was still very raw and the whole world had dramatically shifted forever.

It’s a reminder of just how far he fell and just how much he destroyed himself. All to retain some piece of power and spotlight. Underneath, Rudy was always a scumbag. But he could’ve cemented a positive memory for his actions on and after 9/11.

He instead chose to destroy that legacy and returned to being a scumbag liar and disbarred disgrace.

That scene was an unexpected gut punch.
I know a bunch of those FDNY guys standing on that stage, and many are now dead of 9/11 cancer.

Agreed on all counts, especially the first graph. In real time, it felt right that he was there, and he had a perfect delivery on the "why start now" answer when Lorne asked if it was OK to be funny. It's incredible that he threw it all away, and that he aligned himself with the biggest scumbag of all in order to keep the grift going...and that that scumbag has been president twice. Sigh.

That final montage centered around Paul McCartney was perfect.

And I was slightly surprised there was no mention of Christopher Walken and Foo Fighters. Maybe it's because Dave Grohl has retold the story so often, it didn't make the cut because everything else was so fresh? It still makes me laugh.
