I love this thread because it allows me to not waste time watching shitty SNL, but I don't miss the good stuff.

I just DVR it every week and then check the board on Sunday or Monday to see if there's anything worth watching on it.

I think a lot of the stuff the original cast did was terribly dated and/or overrated. I actually think the political stuff holds up better than some of the other stuff.

For my money, the best cast ever would have been Mike Myers' first season (probably as a featured player) where they had Carvey, Hartman, Nealon, Hooks, Miller, Jackson, Lovitz, not sure if Nora Dunn was still there. I'm guessing it would have been in the 1988-90 range.

There was not a bad person in that cast. Two superstars, Miller's update was probably twice as long as it is now and rarely had someone come out to kill five minutes of it, and if someone did, they almost always killed. (Carvey as Miller, A. Whitney Brown, Al Franken...)

I was thinking that the years with Carvey and Hartman were really strong.

Also, usually the bigger the cast gets, the worse the show gets...

Yeah. I think this is the same for anything from the past - You just remember that The Clash was awesome, overlooking the fact that Ratt and Journey sold like 10 times as many albums (to steal something from Chuck Klostermann). Old SNL does have some standout bits, but it's still a show from the 1970s, with six-minute sketches with bees and drug references.

I actively dislikeed Journey back in the day, but have a kind of soft spot for their stuff now.

London Calling was like an unexpected jolt of adrenalin, and The Clash was awesome. Bad taste endures, however.

Watched the season finale earlier tonight. What the heck was with Mick Jagger singing the blues? Did he write that song the day before the performance? I really like the Rolling Stones, but that was awful.

Victoria Jackson is a total looney toon now.

She really is. Criticized "Glee" for showing a kiss between the two gay males last year. When she was called homophobic, she said "homophobic" is a "cute liberal buzzword."
